The trajectory of the Monument to the Victims of Communism in Canada has taken an unexpected and embarrassing turn. A year after the monument's inauguration in Ottawa, Canadian authorities decided that the memorial will no longer bear the names of the individuals who were to be honored there. The measure was taken after investigations revealed that most of the people listed had ties to Nazism or collaborated in war crimes during World War II.
The monument was inaugurated in December 2024, but it has been controversial from the start. The areas reserved for inscribing names have remained covered by black plaques since the official opening. Now, the Canadian Department of Historic Heritage has confirmed that these individual tributes have been definitively abandoned, contradicting the original design.
Project origin and funding model
The construction of the monument was approved by the Canadian government in 2009 and commissioned to the Liberty Foundation, a non-profit organization formed by immigrants and descendants of people from Eastern Europe, regions that were part of the Soviet Union and other socialist regimes.

The communists labeled everyone who opposed them a Nazi or fascist, and they still do.
Ooops, eh?
They knew they were Nazis all along. They just got caught.
Canuckistan certainly did Nazi that coming!
Canadians are weasels.
Of the highest order
I’m surprised Canada would have anything to honor victims of communism in the first place.
Yeahhh… I’m calling BS that they were Nazis. I’m sure the same research team that confirmed there were mass graves of indigenous youths near Canadian schools “discovered” this.
Can’t besmearch the good name of communism.
😂😂😂
canuck_conservative saddened.
I try to please.
Nazis, commies let’s call the whole thing off.
‘Canuckistan certainly did Nazi that coming!”
Nicely done
Never honor a sinner.
Only Mary and of course Jesus.
And Trudeau?
Not Canada’s first Nazi oooopsie. From AI;
“Canada’s House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota resigned in September 2023 following a major controversy after he invited and publicly honored Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old Ukrainian Canadian veteran who fought with the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, a Nazi military unit, during World War II.
The incident occurred during a joint address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Canadian Parliament, where Rota introduced Hunka as a war hero, prompting a standing ovation from members of Parliament, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Rota later apologized, stating he was unaware of Hunka’s past and accepted full responsibility for the error, which caused widespread condemnation from Jewish groups, Holocaust survivors, and international leaders.”
Operation Paperclip
Operation Paperclip was a secret United States intelligence program in which more than 1,600 German scientists, engineers, and technicians were taken from former Nazi Germany to the US for government employment after the end of World War II in Europe, between 1945 and 1959; several were confirmed to be former members of the Nazi Party, including the SS or the SA. The effort began in earnest in 1945, ...
Fact check on aisle one ...
... the Victims of Communism memorial was a project during the Harper conservative years, largely a project of private citizens as no Canadian government would be all that likely to start such a memorial. Therefore the monument had the names supplied by the people involved in the project. There are thousands of people from Hungary (post-1956), Czechoslovakia (post 1968) and various other places in eastern Europe living in Canada. A certain percentage of them hold some neo-Nazi views, others are just ordinary conservatives or even progressives who didn’t want to stay for communist bread lines.
So when the Liberals got back into power in 2015 they more or less ignored the Victims of Communism memorial treating it as a private project. This hasn’t even made the news in Canada because only about 1% of Canadians probably ever heard of the Victims of Communism memorial, and those would have been aware that when you have a gathering of anti-communists in any western country, you are bound to have some neo-Nazis in the mix. It goes with the territory.
So like most breathless reports about Canada, it’s yet another nothingburger that will ripple briefly on the surface of the deep unknowing that is your neighbor to the north. Rather than there being vast conspiracies up here, there are vast silences. People know just about nothing about most political issues. You can find the same sort of people without crossing our border. Lots and lots of them.
