Police will release a man detained in connection with yesterday’s deadly shooting, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said late Sunday night.
What we know so far • The person of interest detained in connection with yesterday’s deadly shooting at Brown University has been identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson of Wisconsin, multiple law enforcement sources tell CNN.
• Sources said earlier that the person of interest was found with a revolver and a small Glock handgun in his room at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island. A CNN crew was at the hotel when law enforcement swarmed the location early this morning.
• The shooting left two students dead and nine others injured at the Ivy League school in Providence. A vigil and community event were held at a local park Sunday evening, where the city’s mayor said residents could come together and “shine a little bit of light.” Classes and exams have been canceled at Brown as the campus reels from the shooting.

Something seemed off about this from the initial reports I saw. Looks like this is a Richard Jewell moment.

So, the police may have spend all this Sunday ruining the reputation of someone so obviously innocent, he didn’t even spend one full night in jail? Is that what just happened?
I’m glad to hear that the cops were aggressively pursuing this, but there are certain remarks you can publicly make about someone (guilty or innocent) that can never be fully walked back.
If this young man turns out to be fully innocent, I see a Defamation of Character lawsuit being brought, one that will end up being quietly settled out of court, so as not to highlight this “OOPS!” all over again.
Erickson is going to get himself some Benajmins.
So they have no clue who the shooter is or where the shooter is... That’s disturbing.

I wrote this earlier, before this guy was released.
I watched Fox’s live broadcast last night. The anchor - I don’t know the guy’s name - was pretty amped up.
He said, in effect, that they won’t catch the shooter because
1) no footage or image,
2) no description except for a guy with a black shirt,
3) the shooting happened when it was dark, making it harder to track him with other cameras,
4) speculation that the shooter went to a room/place where he had some stashed change of clothing,
5) board an Amtrak train (the station is reportedly nearby) and
6) never be identified.
This is a strange twist...

There were many reports that the shooter yelled out something before he started shooting. Someone MUST know what he said. Why aren’t they providing that information, which would help find the person? We all know why....
Now that they’ve smeared him for life.
