WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump will eliminate fuel standard regulations imposed by President Joe Biden when he signs an executive order on Dec. 3 in the Oval Office.
His directive will reduce the number of miles a vehicle must travel on a mile of gasoline, a move that will mitigate car price increases of about $1,000 and save Americans approximately $109 billion, according to administration officials.
Representatives from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis are expected to join the president for the signing ceremony.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a division of the Department of Transportation, oversees the Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations—enacted by Congress in 1975 to reduce fuel consumption by setting miles per gallon standards for vehicles. A difference of opinion in recent administrations—with Democrats preferring electric vehicles and pushing to increase fuel efficiency for gas-powered vehicles, while Trump’s presidencies have focused on reducing costs and regulations—resulted in a series of policy reversals.
Biden strengthened fuel economy standards in June 2024 by 2 percent annually for passenger vehicles and light trucks.
Increases of 8 to 10 percent annually were proposed for some new vehicles.
President Barack Obama ramped up standards and set a goal in 2012 of achieving 54.5 miles per gallon for light passenger vehicles by 2025. Trump rolled back Obama’s initiatives in 2020 during his first term in office. The president also rescinded California’s electric vehicle mandate, which sought to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2030, when he signed three related congressional acts on June 12, including one that revoked the Golden State’s ability to impose tailpipe emissions limits. Trump signed dozens of executive orders since taking office in January, including one called “Unleashing American Energy,” aligned with his agenda of increasing domestic energy production and limiting regulations that he said are negatively affecting the economy and driving inflation.

No more corn for fuel...
This is what we voted for. The rats had every intention of using the rules to force ICE vehicles off the roads. This BS has added thousands to the price of cars.
Cars are WAY beyond the point of diminishing returns on fuel economy. The capital cost of all the ultralight materials and energy saving gadgets is far beyond the fuel savings you will ever achieve over the life of the car. And your repair costs are a LOT higher with the energy saving gadgets. The start/stop at red lights is a prime example. Heavier starters and batteries are required which hurt mileage. The number of starts / stops required to achieve any lifetime savings is ONLY met by city dwellers, but most of them use public transportation. Suburban and exurban people do not make enough starts / stop cycles to make it pay. It was the ultimate idiocy to have car companies install that in cars. But it was all about cutting the last mg of CO2 out of the atmosphere to “save the earth.” Meanwhile, one coal plant brought online by China spews a million times more CO2 in a year than all the CO2 prevented by the start / stop “feature.”
It will also save lives. As the democRATS/DemoKKKrats raced to get everyone out of their cars and onto mass transit, the idiotic fuel mileage standards made too many cars death traps. No hard steel, heavy metal for better protection.
This is exactly what I voted for
Exactly.
Private jet Hollywood types burning 30,000 pounds of Jet A to go see Taylor Swift concerts between film shoots are about to lecture us on carbon and saving the world now.
Get rid of ethanol mandates and cut car CAFE back to 28 MPG and trucks abolish it. Give me a pushrod V6 Chevrolet pickup designed for its job instead of having a car 4-cammer V6. And we don’t need those turbo 4’s doing the job of a big banger V6 or V8.
Just as there should be no government subsidies, there should be ZERO fuel standards. Let competition in a self-governing FREE MARKET decide the standards Dems call us Marxists when they tell us what “standards” should be.
I hope they do something about the compact tractor emission crap.
and California will increase it by 100 ,LOL
Then do diesel so people can stop pouring piss into their engines.
God bless you Mr. Trump.
NOW, dismantle the $3+ trillion, 80%+ unconstitutional portion of the federal gov’t and MAGA by MORE INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM AND PROSPERITY, AND LESS GOV’T!!!
Which ‘government official’ actually makes the call?
Go back to the Carter era
What is that? Bring me up to date.
Paid $2.29/gal for gas today in Tulsa area. 🤑
A compact tractor over 25hp needs to have, I forget what they actually call it, a high temperature exhaust burn to get rid of diesel deposits or something in the cylinders.
What happened to automotive styling over the decades that resulted in the majority of cars looking like jelly beans?Back in the 1930s, you had Delahaye’s swooping, voluptuous front fenders and the streamlined and futuristic Phantom Corsair, which was perhaps a design too far ahead of its time. In the early ’60s, there were fins and body-side lines that were practically fins, and they sometimes even wrapped around the back. The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray had split rear windows. There was art. It was automotive styling at its finest.

[R]egulations definitely stifle designers’ creativity. High hoods and blunt front ends are incorporated to improve pedestrian safety. And designers want to optimize aerodynamics, especially with the pressing fuel economy regulations.
