WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is expected to announce a proposal Wednesday to weaken vehicle mileage rules for the auto industry, loosening regulatory pressure on automakers to control pollution from gasoline-powered cars and trucks, according to several people familiar with the White House plans.
The move would be the latest action by the Trump administration to reverse Biden-era policies that encouraged cleaner-running cars and trucks, including electric vehicles. Burning gasoline for vehicles is a major contributor to planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. The Republican administration says the new rules would increase Americans’ access to the full range of gasoline vehicles they need and can afford.
Ford CEO Jim Farley said in a statement Wednesday that the planned rollback was “a win for customers and common sense.”
“As America’s largest auto producer, we appreciate President Trump’s leadership in aligning fuel economy standards with market realities. We can make real progress on carbon emissions and energy efficiency while still giving customers choice and affordability,” Farley said.
Environmentalists decried the decision.
“In one stroke Trump is worsening three of our nation’s most vexing problems: the thirst for oil, high gas pump costs and global warming,” said Dan Becker, director of the Safe Climate Transport Campaign for the Center for Biological Diversity.
“Trump’s action will feed America’s destructive use of oil, while hamstringing us in the green tech race against Chinese and other foreign carmakers,” Becker said.

FUNNY HOW HE NEVER MENTIONS A WORD ABOUT THE #1 WORLD POLLUTER-—CHINA
Yes that’s never happened before. /sarc

And gasoline that won’t eat your aluminum carb.
Bring back the 427 and Holley carbs!

And gasoline that won’t eat your aluminum carb.
Forget the carbs. FI is 10 times better. Cleaner and more powerful.
Good. Put the 5.0 Coyote V8 back in the F-150
No, cars are nearly pollution free. These regs are Global Warming laws.
Maybe the AP can explain how to dispose of those big batteries inside EVs?
What does this mean for the Toyota Hilux???
The most common gasoline engine now is a turbo-charged 4-cylinder in and around 2 Liter displacement. That engine is the current “state of the art” to meet emissions and fuel mileage without sacrificing too much performance. The push for EV’s was putting pressure on these.
I’d like to see normally aspirated V8’s in the 5 liter range become more common. But those are pretty much headed for extinction. Those engines can be maintained by pretty much any garage, or (gasp) the owner. If Trump can roll back fleet fuel mileage and the more onerous emissions, then maybe we can get back to that.
Didn’t CAFE have more to do with the oil embargo in the 70s?
Ban spyware In cars too while you’re at it
My Acura went 265k
That is absolutely true!
That’s how it started. But the administrative state has constantly reduced the CAFE numbers for cars. They have a separate CAFE limit for light trucks that is somewhat higher.
The number is largely a fiction that everyone agrees to. Hybrids have a largely theoretical gas mileage figure that is highly variable. But the government accountants agree to a one-size-fits-all number that disregards the driver, terrain & climate factors. And EV’s are like handing out papal indulgences to the Big 3.
We can use 'em to power the Electric Chairs when we bring back Capital Punishment for Islamic Terrorists, Murders, Rapists and Child Molesters.
Just think, portable Electric Chairs right at the Crime Scene!
Trump should invite Volkswagen back to build new factories to make their specialty. Diesel powered automobiles and maybe light trucks. Honda is also good at diesel automobiles. Blame the EPA clowns for the dire situation, that not one diesel model is sold in USA
Agree!
Absolutely. Imposed by Jimmy Carter administration along with the 55 mph national speed limit as an energy conservation measure. It had nothing to do with air pollution or climate change.
This is classic mission creep and climate propaganda. The problem is as soon as Trump leaves office, the next democrap will re-impose them, and more. Congress needs to act to make this permanent (like that’s gonna happen! LOL).
Or bring back the old Ford 300 inline 6. I knew a man who had a half ton truck with the Ford straight 6. He could pull a loaded 4 horse trailer easily.
