The Boy Scouts of America taught me valuable lessons about tying knots, lighting fires, and what it means to be a man, but I’m glad to see the Department of War reconsidering its historic partnership with the Scouts.
Founded in 1910, the Boy Scouts of America taught young men wilderness survival skills, fostered friendship, and trained boys to become citizens and leaders. In order to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, a young man must not just demonstrate mastery of many skills but also plan his own project, leading others.
For these and other reasons, the military awards an automatic rank increase to Eagle Scouts who enlist. A 2017 post for Scouting Magazine noted that 20% of West Point cadets, 12% of the Naval Academy Class of 2016, and 10% of Air Force Academy cadets had attained the highest rank in Scouting.
Yet the Boy Scouts of America no longer exists, and the organization that replaced it, Scouting America, leaves a great deal to be desired. It is high time the military reconsider, and establish clear benchmarks for a scouting program that fosters virtue, rather than virtue-signaling.

It’s really sad to see that excellent organization (in the past) destroyed.
Rump Rangers took over the Boy Scouts
Right? The minute the scouts were bullied into allowing gay scoutmasters I knew the organization was cooked. It was bankrupted by sex abuse cases. The Catholic Church made exactly the same mistake by allowing gays into seminaries thinking that they would be celibate. Fat chance.
This isn’t a bug; it was the plan all along.
Class of ‘68, Troop 33, Yokosuka, when there was a good reason for the USN to support Scouting
“Scouting” is the new “grooming.”
Nothing like putting the wolves in among the lambs and calling it “inclusion,” or “diversity.”
Might as well call the organization “Epstein’s Corps.”
“… at the beginning of this year the organization changed its name from Boy Scouts of America to “Scouting America.”
Considered enrolling your boys in a Trail Life troop. Many churches sponsor troops. It is a Christ-centered version of what BSA once was. Troops typically accept boys from 1st grade through high school. Adult supervision is an absolute requirement and dads and grand-dads are encouraged to join the troop.
In the ‘60s the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts asked permission to hold their meetings in our church. They meet in churches quite often.
Dad refused. He told us that there is going to be trouble with these organizations in the future and he wanted no part of it.
I wish this could have the beneficial effect of good people knowing who the predators are and never leaving them alone with children.
But, the woke police would notice the vigilance and call it discriminatory behavior or violence against gays.
And of course the worst predators will not announce their presence and hunt in secret.
As an Eagle scout and enlisted soldier, and now retired Dept of the Army Civilian, I have never heard of any service granting a grade increase to an Eagle scout.
I liked it better to be called BSA, but when that once good organization becomes corrupted & won’t change, what do you do?
BSA lacked sufficient adult supervision, especially during outings. It also fell way short of providing proper moral guidance, despite their lip service to God and reverence. BTW, I’m a Eagle scout minted 1969, Baltimore Area Council, Troop 110. Nixon’s signature is on my award.
I’ve been involved with Trail Life since the day it began. I fully agree with you and the author.
There are troops in all 50 states with new ones announced weekly. Boys become men, men become better men, husbands and fathers.
FReepmail me if you want to start a troop at your church.
I’m unaware of your reference to AT&T. A search was unrevealing.
A citation or example link would be appreciated.

I was in the BSA in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Made it to Life Scout My son was in the BSA in the ‘90s and early 2000s. He Earned his Eagle Rank and the skills he learned in Scouting made him a successful manager and citizen without a crippling college degree.
I was a Scouter, Assistant Scout Master and Scout Master along with being a merit badge counselor, but when the BSA went woke, I left the organization for good.
What Scouting America has done to that honorable organization, the BSA is beyond disgusting. Another victory for Socialism and the rest of the left.
No longer the organization that my two sons earned their Eagle rank from.
Quite a shame
Trail life is a feeble attempt to be something on apar with Scouting. Trail Life is an attempt by churches to gain control over boys needing a heavy dose of Christian propaganda.
Trail Life isn’t
Yeah, saw that.
If you’re referencing Stephenson’s reversing the ban on gays, I still don’t see the reference to AT&T other than the obvious. Absent linkage to funding a change in culture through donations, I can’t assign the BSA’s demise to AT&T.
Given his short term there, I submit that the shocking transition of the scouts 4-5 years later was due to other factors which many FReepers - including yours truly - have written about here: Infiltration by the left (and, frankly, abandonment or willful ignorance by the right).
The BSA didn’t just go woke:
We let them.
The continued reference to CWII (and ‘cold war’) are not coincidental...nor are the current headlines targeting Hegseth (they’re all related).
