Americans were already feeling uneasy about purchasing an electric vehicle. Then the generous tax subsidies ended.
Sales of EVs plummeted by nearly one-third in October after President Trump and Republicans killed the $7,500 federal tax credit.
The end of EV subsidies follows a trio of regulatory changes that eliminate mandates on automakers to produce electric vehicles and are poised to push the decline in EV sales even further.
“The policy reversal on EVs that has occurred this year is a remarkable return to sanity after decades of government actions to force EV production,” said Brent Bennett, a policy director at the Texas Public Policy Foundation and author of a comprehensive study on EV subsidies.
The latest numbers provided by Cox Automotive show car dealers sold 74,835 electric vehicles last month, a 30.3% decrease from October 2024 and a drop of more than 48% since September, the final month the federal tax credit was available for EV purchases.
Mr. Trump campaigned on ending EV subsidies and removing the regulatory framework that forced automakers to build an increasing number of electric vehicles.
The policy changes and elimination of subsidies are expected to significantly curb EV sales even further next year.
Ford CEO Jim Farley said 2026 electric vehicle sales could be “cut in half or more” due to the regulatory changes and lack of subsidies.

Now we see people don't want to see these EV's. It's only the elites that believe we need to be punished for not confirming to the Klaus Schwab ideal.
Ya don’t say...

We'll see...I love my big old Buick...It gets lousy mileage...but I just don't care.
Even Stevie Wonder could see that!..............
Less competition for Tesla.
But then, Tesla always led the EV pack.
I am not an EV hater, but I do not own one.
when or if I think they will work better for me than my I.C.E. cars I will probably get one.
remember when the Govt got their panties in a twist about incandescent bulbs and then subsidized nasty mercury filled fire hazards called mini florescent, that worked so well.
whatever happened to free market forces?
Every time I hear about the good things associated with owning an EV, I am surprised that Elon or any automaker is allowed to even sell these as is.
Two still unresolved issues:
A. EVs still known to spontaneously burst into lithium fueled flames. Lithium flames are nearly impossible to extinguish and often have to be simply managed or contained and allowed to burn themselves out.
B. At least three times a year, I hear about someone getting locked in one of those Evs, and unable to get out.
A few times, the passenger was locked in after the car had caught on fire. I’ve heard of at least three such deaths.
I suppose I actually do know why these cars are allowed to be sold as is, even with the built in flaws discussed:
There is just too much money to be made by a great deal of people. It all comes down to money invested and profits made.
Now do ethanol. Tired of that crap in my fuel.
Wouldn’t you really rather have a Buick?
I need an EV to prove that they can do a smokey burnout before I’m interested.
Every dollar that EVs bring to the manufacturers apparently goes into their virtuous television commercials.
Oh, how I shall miss those.
Queue Captain Renault.
I have noticed lower levels of smug.
So can we press the 100 year pause button again on electric cars, like we did circa 1910-1920?
Nobody alive today should have to deal with that lunacy during their frail human lifespans.
Same with “global pandemic” overreactions. Only allowed to happen about every 100 years. Anything more often than that is proof that we are all A Florida Man.
What a shock, you stop paying people to buy them and sales go down.
Maybe we should have another MLB Disco Night, only burning EVs in the outfield instead of vinyl Disco albums.
What could go wrong?
I used to drive a 67 Buick LaSabre for many years. Only got 10 miles a gallon and had to be premium gas.
Second and third that. Just another scam.
Hopefully EVs will go the way of the dinosaur one day.......when serving in my church’s parking ministry, those things are the bane of my existence.
Never understood why such an obvious safety issue like the fact that you can’t hear those infernal contraptions approaching has never been addressed.
And then those mercury lights rapidly got replaced by LED’s in a market decision and the mercury lights went away.
