Teamsters-Backed Delivery Protection Act Secures Supermajority in New York City Council
Teamsters Union official press release ^ | 2025-11-17 | Matt McQuaid

(NEW YORK) – The Teamsters and their allies have reached a major milestone for working people as the Delivery Protection Act secured a bipartisan, veto-proof supermajority of sponsors in the New York City Council. This legislation would hold Amazon accountable for its exploitative labor practices and make the e-commerce giant responsible for the safety of its drivers and city streets.

“Amazon’s dangerous business model is built on corporate greed. The best way to stop Amazon from undercutting employers who actually follow the law and respect workers is to pass the Delivery Protection Act.,” said Thomas Gesualdi, President of Teamsters Joint Council 16. “That’s why Teamsters are demanding city council leadership schedule a hearing on this bill immediately.”

Under the Delivery Protection Act, Amazon and other last-mile companies would be required to obtain city licenses and comply with all local, state, and federal laws. The bill would also require companies to directly employ their drivers, putting an end to Amazon’s exploitative Delivery Service Provider (DSP) model across the five boroughs.

I expect this will be the first of many such municipal laws in other cities.

And they wonder why things are so expensive in NY.

Yes, let’s raise the price to deliver consumer goods to consumers.

Oh, brother. Such typical histrionics.

* exploitative labor practices
* Amazon’s dangerous business model
* corporate greed
* Amazon’s exploitative Delivery Service Provider (DSP) model

Good bye to low-price products delivered to your doorstep in hours. Get ready for USPS- and DMV-level service in your home deliveries.

I’m surprised to hear that Amazon does not obey all federal, state, city and local laws. I wonder how they got away with that for so long. /s

The Social workers will not provide any safety on the Streets of NYC, for Teamsters or Amazon.

Sounds like a redo of the taxi medallions regulation that I though Uber and Lyft won in court against.

...make the e-commerce giant responsible for the safety of its drivers and city streets.

The purpose of government is to get the criminals endangering the safety of drivers and city streets back on those city streets ASAP when they are arrested for endangering the safety of drivers and city streets.

I talked to a young black lady who delivered one of my packages. She said that she only worked when she had the time and it was a wonderful supplement to her other jobs. She liked the freedom it gave her. She seemed genuinely happy with the arrangement.

My guess is Amazon will stop delivering in areas where they can’t use their model. And that greedy corporation thing? If the price of delivery increases the cost of the product increases too. So, it won’t be Amazon who pays all the bloated benefits governments buy votes with.

By the way, the additional cost won’t just be labor. It’s all the paperwork and compliance costs. At my General Dynamics facility, they had to hire a full-time guy just to keep up with the three different EPA organizations and their hundreds of constantly changing rules and regulations. He was one of the pricier employees. Amazon will need to hire people to review every new rule and regulation. Those strangle companies.

With my own company I’d hire people but if I failed one week to file the correct forms because I was sick or in the hospital just one of them could cost me a $10,000 penalty. So, I don’t hire people. It keeps me from growing buy I just don’t want the hassle.

You pay our street tax and your deliveries will be protected. Old school mafia protection racket but run by government now. At least the mafia actually protected your stuff.

Guy I know builds and sets up trade show booths all over the country

Refuses to work anymore in NYC because of unions

They can’t touch anything coming off their truck at the dock. One union employee sets the stuff on the dock, another one takes it to the display site, another unloads it off the dolly

All getting a time and a half for Saturday, double time on Sunday

And don’t you dare touch a power tool or electric cord without a union electrician or ladder for the carpenters. Another union to put down the carpet

They stand around for 20 minutes drinking coffee while deciding where to begin.

Let me guess, the independent Delivery Service Providers declined to join the Teamsters Union and pay exorbitant dues.
