Not long ago Ford boldly declared that soon, 40% of its production would be all-electric. The F-150 Lightning was going to be the vanguard of that revolution. It was going to be the world beater, the very model of electric—EV—glory.
Alas, it was not to be. The conventionally powered F-150 has long been the most popular truck in America, the standard by which others were judged and the best selling. Unfortunately for Ford, the F-150 Lightning isn’t any of those things. According to AutoBlog.com, Ford has lost $13 billion on its EVs since 2023, and surely more than that before. In the first quarter of 2024 alone Ford’s losses continued to be astronomical:

Lightning MSRPs have been as high as $90,000. Is that $132,000 on Ford’s production cost, or on the MSRP? What company can possibly lose that kind of money and remain in business? And why haven’t Ford shareholders stormed corporate HQ with torches and pitchforks?
I write this as an owner of two conventionally powered Fords. They’re fine vehicles I plan to keep for many years to come, so I have an interest in Ford’s continued success.
Ford’s EV losses to date in 2025 have been equally catastrophic:
The move comes after Ford’s electric vehicle business, Model e, lost another $1.4 billion in Q3. Ford’s EV unit has now lost $3.6 billion through the first nine months of 2025.
Around $3 billion of the loss is due to its current EVs, such as the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E. The other $600 million is for investments in next-gen electric models.

I sometimes feel sorry for the carmakers that went EV under intense pressure from federal Dim regulations and also ESG investing pressure (IMHO mostly state run pensions looking for leftist companies to invest the massive pension funds into).
Haters gonna hate, I get it, so go ahead. 😉
After years of owning ICE F 150s, I bought an 11 mo old Lightning Lariat coming off a corporate lease.
I only paid $45K for it. Try buying a 1 yr old ICE Lariat for $45K.
I’m retired, have two other ICE vehicles, and just dont drive as much- like to the airport every week.
Without question its the best F150 I’ve ever owned, and I loved the others.
Yeah I can’t go nearly 600 miles via the extended range tanks on my previous F150. But I dont need to. Fully charged it shows 330 miles at 28,000 miles on the odometer.
That’s plenty.
Fyi, its the fastest 0-60 vehicle we’ve ever owned, and we have a Porsche Cayman S.
So rag all you want. Yes it was priced too high new. Yes the Biden EV push was a scam. I know all that.
But if you owned one, you’d love it.
Flame suit on.
Have a nice day.
EVs make sense in some use cases, I am considering a Tesla S.
But.... they are not ready for prime time. Without goobermint (taxpayer) subsidies, they are not cost-effective. They are NOT environmentally friendly, and the charging infrastructure is just not there.
Likewise with the choice for Ford’s EV truck to be a full size F-150. EV limitations aren’t conducive to what many buyers of large trucks expect from a truck. However, most small truck owners typically use their truck for mainly daily long commutes (small truck = gas savings) and an every now and then dirty weekend chore involving light loads (yard work equipment to go cut your elder parents’ grass). Thus, a small EV truck might have practical application, but I can’t see a large EV truck being practical.
And I 100% hate the Dim mandates and tax incentives trying to push people into EV’s. Ironically difficult as it sometimes is to explain to fellow big government haters, I 100% love being able to produce almost all of the energy my family consumes (decentralized solar can charge our EV, but I have no way of making homemade gasoline for our gas pickup).
“Not long ago Ford boldly declared that soon, 40% of its production would be all-electric. “
It wasn’t bold it was cringing and servile. Ford among others thought government was going to shove EVs down the markets throat and instead of laughing at the very idiocy of the idea as they should have done they they tried to get on board with the facists and help shove. We all wondered what they could possibly be thinking as EVs made no market sense whatsoever. Well that was it. They in their unAmerican zeal thought we had no choice.
Your example falls into the category of one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure. Ford can only go so long producing their EVs in the red. That goes for ICE cars as well.
“But if you owned one, you’d love it.”
Doubtful......I’d be laying awake every night staring at the ceiling wondering if it was about to spontaneously combust and burn my house down.
Gotta say, the carmakers were caught between a rock and a hard place back when EVs were the latest fad in DC...
No problem though, they'll just pass all that loss on to the consumer...
FORD.....fix or replace daily

******
Remember the stupid carmakers flew in on corporate jets to beg Obama for credits? That is how stupid American carmakers are.
And lots of chrome.
And really cool multi-colored paint jobs.
After nostalgia became a thing, Edsels became collector items. Will there be boneyards for EV's, so they can be discovered 30 years from now and be treasured?
Resale is almost nothing and Ford doesn’t want it back either ,LOL
I was thinking about putting these on my garden cart for hauling heavy stuff.
Same here. We have 10 kW of solar, paid for, and i charge the truck daily from 11-4.
I’ll let the haters hate on solar and EV.
Trash and treasure, like another poster wrote.
Blie Oval is building a 2.3 billion dollar battery plant in Marshall, Michigan. It is enormous. The land is 2 miles by 1/2 mile in size, or larger. Some people go to the fountain circle and protest every weekend and have for 2 years.
We live in the country on ‘property’ and my Lightning earns a living. The constant torque at any RPM is *really* nice in all wheel drive.
Ford uses a different battery tech than others. No battery fires.
Everyone has their phobias... 😉
Guess that Ford maybe should have listened to people that knew what they were doing. The problems with EVs just seem to keep piling up & the list has probably not reached it’s peak yet. At the same time, I keep hearing of uses that feature L-Ion batteries & some green energy use ideas that sound practical. They are usually small projects; nothing so large as a vehicle.
