What if Democrats’ Big Shutdown Loss Turns Out to Be a Win?
The New York Times ^ | 2025-11-11 | Annie Karni

Posted on 11/12/2025 1:35:16 AM PST by Salman

At first blush, the deal that paved the way to end the government shutdown this week looked exactly like the kind of feeble outcome many Democrats have come to expect from their leaders in Washington.

After waging a 40-day fight to protect Americans’ access to health care — one they framed as existential — their side folded after eight defectors struck a deal that would allow President Trump and Republicans to reopen the government this week without doing anything about health coverage or costs, enraging all corners of the party.

But even some of the Democrats most outraged by the outcome are not so certain that their party’s aborted fight was all for naught.

They assert that in hammering away at the extension of health care subsidies that are slated to expire at the end of next month, they managed to thrust Mr. Trump and Republicans onto the defensive, elevating a political issue that has long been a major weakness for them.

I’m convinced that what really forced the hand of the Democrats was Trump’s brilliant rant about sending the ACA subsidies directly to the people who qualify them rather than paying them to the insurance companies. If the Republicans can come up with something like that as a “fix” for the ObamaCare fiasco then they will have a major tailwind for the 2026 midterms.

I dunno, wouldn’t just sending all entitlement directly to the inputters be the same? Most geezers love SS. Most old people, if given it back in their 40s+, would gamble it away or use it on drugs.

Sadly paying back directly to them in late installments is probably best because most people are retarded and if they got direct payments instead of to their medicare would use it on slots and weed.

Psyops intended to weak the resolve of the Republicans.

The House Democrats tried to add the ACA subsidies back into the bill in committee, but the Republicans blocked it. The Democrats knew that if the subsidies were successfully added back, that would force the bill to go back to the Senate, adding at least another week to the shutdown as we head into Thanksgiving. The Democrats can't blame the Republicans for the shutdown anymore, so prolonging it even more with an amended House bill just proves that they weren't serious about wanting to help the little people.

Anyone who thinks that elevating this issue makes it a win for Democrats has to answer why the Democrats made the subsidies sunset in the first place? Answer why the Democrats are trying to force the Republicans to do what the Democrats chose not to do three years ago?

If it's in the budget it's not an "entitlement".

Entitlements are anything you get paid from the government no matter what you paid in.

Most people are too stupid to manage their money and sadly need to be swindled by the government not to use it on drugs. And even then most end up doing it anyway.

Nope, just whistling past the graveyard.

Obamacare illustrates the emptiness of the Dems new shiny toy “affordability”. Huge subsidies do not make insurance affordable. As with all welfare programs the cost of Obamacare has sky rocketed. The collapse of Obamacare is not a Republican problem. This is a good opportunity to do a full post mortem on the failed program. Trump is on the right track with a health welfare check that can only be spent on buying insurance. At least it would screen out fraud.

“After waging a 40-day fight to protect Americans’ access to health care”

Almost the first sentence is a total LIE. They were protecting free health care for illegal aliens.

That’s completely different than the Obamacare scam.

But Trump and the GOP ran against it in 2016, then turned around as soon as they were in office. Same as immigration now.

Yes they are right! A total lose in this shut could turn around all of the 80/20 issues the Democrats are on the wrong end of. - NOT!
Go away!

“...most people are retarded and if they got direct payments instead of to their medicare would use it on slots and weed.”

That’s true, sad and hilarious. A lot of people I know who are well educated and seem smart gasp at the concept of being in control of their own social security. Retarded indeed.

Polanski, the one who seems to be on drugs is YOU if you’re so delusional that you think “Most people are too stupid to manage their money and sadly need to be swindled by the government not to use it on drugs. And even then most end up doing it anyway.” There are a lot of hard working people and elders that only use the drugs to keep themselves alive. Some of those because of the adverse effects of the COVID “vaccine”. So if you have something useful to contribute, do. However, casting aspertions on many of your fellow citizens who have and do work hard and take care of themselves thanks to their hard work, truly isn’t appreciated or acceptable.

It is behind paywall, so I can read… but I think it has put a spotlight on health insurance costs. The chants for Medicare/Medicaid for will grow
