Oklahoma families face transportation barriers amid SNAP funding freeze

As SNAP benefits remain frozen, many Oklahoma families struggle with transportation to access food pantries, while local charities offer some assistance.

Leveda Jordan Smith, a mother of three from southeast Oklahoma City, is among the over 600,000 residents who relied on SNAP benefits before the shutdown.

"Being a mother of 3, not receiving SNAP benefits has made it harder for us to figure out where our next meal is gonna come from, if we're gonna have enough to stretch by," Smith said.

Smith, who does not have a driver's license, depends on her significant other, friends, and family members for transportation. As a student on a tight budget, rideshares are not a viable option for her. The pantries in her area are typically open while she is in class or when her rides are at work. Currently, her family is stocked with canned and boxed goods, but fresh foods like meat, milk, and produce are out of reach.

How did Ms. Leveda Smith get her food before? Did SNAP pay for DoorDash?

The "sob" stories the liberal media will do.

struggle with transportation to access food pantries...

If you can't manage to scrounge/bum/thumb/carpool a ride for free food, you got bigger problems than hunger.

Why can’t she get a license? Is she under age 16? Mentally deficient? Or just too lazy?

I’ve never noticed that the lack of a driver’s license keeping these people from taking to the roadways.

Call up and complain to some Dems in the senate to open the government. The two Senators from OK are Republicans so they voted to fund SNAP

Meat and fish are available in cans.

Milk is available powdered and in cans.

I've relied on them before.

A weekly "weigh-in" should be a requirement for SNAP. I sure this gal is a heifer, beef on the hoof.

When 14% of our population gets SNAP benefits
something is very wrong!
I don’t mind helping disabled, sick,
or people that are temporarily down on their
luck due to circumstances beyond heir control.

A woman with three kids and no husband?
You can get all the birth control
stuff you want for FREE!
Unless rape was involved this is all on
you, you are using the kids as a
“meal ticket”.
I won’t pay you for that.

Do the 12 Walmarts within city limits not deliver in Oklahoma City?

In centuries prior, people like this would have been weeded out.

Official USDA numbers for fiscal year 2024 (Oct 2023–Sep 2024) = 41.7 million people = 12.3% of 340 million.

SNAP is uniquely huge because European countries like the UK, France and Germany replaced food stamps with cash + services.

I’ll give her credit for trying to improve her life by going to college. But hard times require choices. She should suspend her studies briefly and get a job to pay for food.

She hasn’t complained about housing, healthcare, utilities, tuition, or any other necessities, just transportation to a food bank. A part time job should be enough to feed her and her children until the dems-13s open the government.
