FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford told reporters that the reduction will begin on Friday and is intended to alleviate pressure on air traffic controllers.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Wednesday announced that it would reduce flight capacity at the United States' top 40 high-traffic markets by 10% later this week amid the record-long federal government shutdown.
The move comes because of a staffing shortage at airports nationwide because of the government shutdown, which began on Oct. 1. The Transportation Department has seen a high number of air traffic controllers call in sick amid the shutdown because they are required to work without immediate compensation.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford told reporters that the reduction will begin on Friday and is intended to alleviate pressure on air traffic controllers, per Politico. It is not clear what airports will be impacted.
“The national airspace is safe,” Bedford said in a news conference. “These are proactive measures we’re taking so we can guarantee the American public that the national airspace is operating at the highest levels of safety.”
Bedford and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said they will meet with airline leaders later Wednesday to figure out the best way to implement the reduction safely.

Can you scalp airline tickets?
I think they should red flag all non-ICE Government employees and not let them go anywhere. Let them pigout at home instead of making somebody else pay for their Thanksgiving dinner. Damn Government slimeballs.
Just call them Terrorists, that’s what they are.
Stop trying to arguing with them.
What happened to the mass layoffs? Get rid of the TSA at least. In honor of dead dick cheney.
A TDS leftist so-called “judge” issued an illegitimate TRO a few days ago.
Another day another self appointed dictator...
If they don’t want to do their job in congress, they should be impeached and replaced.
This is a solid idea.
Hard to do in a pinch - we *do* need some kind of screening and security and you can’t just spin up privatized screening in a day.... but cutting the TSA is a good idea.
That said - I think the bigger problem is air traffic controllers. God bless Reagan for breaking that union, but the reality of flight management is that such a job *does* probably need to be a federal/public job. And people DO need to get paid.
I say it with gritted teeth - but ATC is a job you really can’t privatize. It requires a national grid control and management. I could see a LONG TERM plan to contract it, but you can’t do it on a dime.
I had some recent air travel turn into a nightmare because of the “sick outs” - and I’m now scheduling some air travel with the idea that I need to give myself a day cushion.
The Global Warming folks should be happy about this.
No patriotic air traffic controllers? Dud they start delivering pizza? Are they living hand to mouth?
If not might as well work. Backpay coming anyway. Backpay should only apply to those still working. For those not working, backpay should come out of their 4,000 hours of accrued sick and vacation time.
Just stop all flights in or out of NYC, Chicago, Detroit, Denver, and all of Commiefornia.
Time to privatize the ATC system, like other countries have. Or bring in the military traffic controllers.

I wondered why military isn’t used either. Easier to limit their flights.
