President Trump on Wednesday invited the entire Senate Republican conference to the White House, where he warned it would be a “tragic mistake” not to terminate the filibuster.
But the president, who has for days called on Republicans to eliminate the filibuster amid an ongoing government shutdown, acknowledged he is likely to face resistance and said he would abide by senators’ wishes.
“I think it’s very important. We have to get the country open. And the way we’re going to do it this afternoon is to terminate the filibuster,” Trump said in remarks from the State Dining Room.
“And it’s possible you’re not going to do that. And I’m going to go by your wishes,” Trump added. “You’re very smart people. We’re good friends. But I think it’s a tremendous mistake. It would be a tragic mistake, actually. It’s time.”
The president’s remarks came on the heels of sweeping election victories for Democrats in New Jersey, Virginia and elsewhere on Tuesday night. He also spoke as the government set a record for longest shutdown at 36 days

Do it!
It’ll be great until democrats are in charge again
Would not be prudent.
Trump said at this breakfast that if the d’s get back in power, they would end the filibuster in a heartbeat, making DC and Puerto Rico a state and packing the SCOTUS. But if we do it now, they may never get back in power because we can pass all sorts of things like voter reform.
Be careful what you wish for.
If the Rats knew then what would come from Harry Reid nuking the judicial filibuster, would they have done it? I don’t know...
Nuke it entirely?
Also, SMH — nuke the filibuster in order to pass a budget CR and open the government? Feels like I’m being force-fed crazy pills.
Don’t get me wrong - just the “calling in sick” by unpaid ATCs has meant a couple flight delays for me, so unfortunately, yes. Government DOES need to be reopened for a few reasons.
But... Honestly? Government shutdowns are not something I particularly dislike.
Well, DJT is gonna have to convince Mike Johnson, because last time I checked he ain’t down with ending the filibuster.
They shouldn’t drop the filibuster. That could literally be the last straw in ruining our country. It is there for a reason. Short term gain should not overwhelm long term loss.
I think the current Democrat party is insane and power hungry. I have no doubt that they will kill the filibuster the first chance they get. If we hold ourselves back, we gain nothing. We aren’t, somehow, blocking some future Democrat action. We are just handicapping ourselves in the current age of politics as a bloodsport. We need to use every tool we can get our hands on.
Mike Johnson has nothing to do or say with the rules of the Senate.
Democrats will do it whether Republicans nuke it or not. They have promised to add states and SCOTUS justices. Believe them. What good is power if you do not use it.
Trump has shown the way using every tool of executive power granted him. Voters need to see Republicans doing more than whining “it’s not our fault!”
Codify Trump’s actions or they are all erased after midterms.
The dems would have done this if not for Manchin and Sinema, and they are gone. Do it!
.... The Democrats have already vowed to get rid of the Filibuster rules once they get back into power to use to administer their Socialist agenda. So WE might as well use this to our own current advantage to help put this nation back on track by administering as many policies as possible while we can without so many incessant and constant roadblocks that are currently being thrown at us.
.
just stop with this idiotic END THE FILIBUSTER nonsense. Thats never gonna happen, and be glad it doesn’t.
Doesn’t matter what Johnson thinks. He is in the House. The filibuster is in the Senate. Talk to Thune.
they threatened it but it didnt happen, did it?? You people gotta think this stuff thru. It would essentially destroy the Senate, make it obsolete. Never gonna happen.
Maybe the “filibuster rule” should be that you literally need to keep talking for hours on end
it would destroy this country within 5 years...these people gotta do some research.
that’s why I’m against ending the filibuster, at some point Democrats will be back in charge if for no other reason than Republicans will roll over and not fight, the Democrats will go hog wild by passing whatever they want, because they play political hardball while Republicans won’t.
Bet they couldn’t get near 51 votes to change the rules
