There are dangerous drug wars south of the U.S. border. American presidents ceremoniously appoint powerful drug czars to wage war on illicit drugs. President Trump and our secretary of war Pete Hegseth are attacking drug-carrying vessels off the coast of Venezuela. But the crucial question is, why are Americans such a receptive, exploding market for cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cannabis?
A major cause of America’s drug abuse epidemic is the relentless erosion of our American character structure. To paraphrase Pogo, “We have found our enemy in the war on drugs, and it is US.” The affliction is internal to America, not merely out there via drug cartels.
Is there a cure for our addiction? A victory in the war on drugs? Yes, but it is doubtful that we have the courage and will to claim the cure or victory.
What is character disorder? How is it connected to drug abuse? What is the role of psychotherapy in the cure of our American character disorders — and by extension, our American substance abuse epidemic?
Some Origins of the Problem
American kids get significant amounts of drugs from their own parents’ medicine cabinets. Many kids mirror their parents’ substance abuse. Many TV commercials cleverly tout chemical solutions to all medical conditions, psychological problems, and somatic complaints. In one TV ad, a handsome guy prefers a cold beer to his cute girlfriend. TV ads urge viewers to ask their doctors for a host of new remedies for everything from depression to social anxiety to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Character and Its Disorders
What is character? How does it relate to personality and personality disorders? “Good” character is important in an ordinary individual, in his political representative, and especially in a president or leader.

Back in the day they used to be called “recreational drugs”. And when you remember that it all makes sense. America spends tons of time and money “recreating”. Whether it’s movies, or sports (watching or playing), or camping, or... drugs. American’s have time to kill and money to use to help them kill it.
“Many TV commercials....”
I se so many of these on TV they go by so fast I often wonder what it is for! Often wonder how many of them are “Snake oil” on almost all channels.
This is not a new thing. The Chinese are just copying the Opium Wars that brought them to their knees in the mid-1800s.
“Television is a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of acrobats, storytellers, dancers, singers, jugglers, sideshow freaks, lion tamers, and football players.
We’re in the boredom-killing business.”
-Howard Beale (Network)
Tendency toward substance abuse is not what’s different about the USA - tolerance of it in our culture is the problem.
We need to return to a system of social taboos. Drug abuse, promiscuity, porn-addiction and vulgarity should be looked down on. These things should be considered uncool. Those behaviors should be considered loser behaviors - those people should not get the job opportunities, the good-looking girlfriends, etc..
Social rejects should get rejected.
Many Americans have abandoned the stoic, religous values of their ancestors and have embraced neo pagan, hedonistic decadence. As John Adams noted, no nation in history has or can survive such a transition. The Democratic Party now is the political party of this large segement of the population. Decent Americans must come to realize that any vote, for any Democrat, anywhere, anytime is a vote to destroy the American nation.
Exactly.
And the new classes of drugs are amazingly powerful and addictive.
For a huge number of people, one or two hits of fentanyl or meth and they are hooked and after a few weeks they are physically addicted
I am so concerned about the possibility of addiction that I have refused to take opiate painkillers and would rather deal with the pain than risk addiction like I had seen happen to others
While some people are genetically predisposed to both becoming addicted, and finding it hard to break away from addiction, the preponderance of addiction lies in taking *any* addictive substance before physical brain maturity.
It is much easier for “young brains” to become addicted and *stay* addicted, than it is for mature brains to do so.
And if a young brain becomes addicted to any drug, it is much easier for them to become addicted to *other* drugs, a training that lasts most of their life.
America is a great market because there is tons of disposable income.
Too much emphasis on the supply part of the problem and not the demand. Locking up the users of weed and other drugs for long, long prison terms and very large fines is needed just as much as blowing up the boats bringing it in.
It does start with parenting. Sadly, I know someone, a family friend, who became addicted to fentanyl. His parents are nice people, and were tremendously kind to my family. I love them to death. But they raised their kids with a very liberal attitude toward things like drinking, smoking and “light” drug use. They were “those parents” who supplied kegs for the kids’ parties, with mom letting teen daughter bum cigs from her, etc. You raise your kids to have an affinity for recreational substances don’t be totally shocked when one of them graduates to some really bad stuff like fentanyl.
I turned on my TV for the first time this year last night, mostly cause it was cold (I have a big plasma) and clicked through all the channels, saw a few old movies playing, and a star trek episode where Scotty was accused of killing women with a knife, but as soon as I got through all the channels I turned it off.
maybe I will turn it on to the youtube fireplace simulator when it starts getting even colder
I’m always amused when there is a drug commercial and the spokes person states: “Don’t take this medicine if you’re allergic to it or any of its’ ingredients”. Sounds like a good idea, but how do you know, unless you take it?
Yes, when they started saying that drug addicts “had a disease” was when it became something you treated instead of locking them up.
It has literally destroyed some of the most beautiful cities in the the country. San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, OR even Burlington, VT have all become NO GO zones because of zombie drug addicts being okay.
The thing about getting addicted to Heroine/Fentanyl it is like Russian Roulette. Sooner or later you are going to die from an overdose.
Marijuana, Hash, even Cocaine were all recreational drugs.
Although Coke is also very addictive for some people. Not so much for others.
“””and a star trek episode where Scotty was accused of killing women with a knife,””””
Your post is 100% accurate, because I also watched that Star Trek episode last night.
BTW, the scene for this episode was at a planet where free love was encouraged.
“We’re in the boredom-killing business”
Another way of saying we’ve got too much spare time.
Drug addiction and crimes are highly correlated.
Lock up the drug users and the judges, attorneys, social workers, and probation officers will not be happy because they will lose their jobs due to lowered crime rates.
That pretty much does away with all rap music, which is a good thing, and some pop and new wave country crap.
Every fool over the last 40 years that said marijuana is not a gateway drug should be drawn and quartered.
