~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana

LAbarksdaleafb2

Barksdale Air Force Base (Barksdale AFB) is a United States Air Force base in northwest Louisiana, United States, in Bossier Parish. It is contiguous to Bossier City, Louisiana, along the base's western and northwestern edge. Barksdale Air Force Base occupies more than 22,000 acres east of Bossier City and along the southern edge of Interstate 20. More than 15,000 active-duty and Air Force Reserve members serve at Barksdale.

The host unit at Barksdale is the 2d Bomb Wing (2 BW), the oldest bomb wing in the Air Force. It is assigned to the Air Force Global Strike Command's (AFGSC) Eighth Air Force (8 AF). Equipped with about 44 B-52H Stratofortress bombers, 2 BW provides flexible, responsive global combat capability and trains all Air Force Global Strike Command and Air Force Reserve Command Boeing B-52 Stratofortress crews.

The base was established in 1932 as Barksdale Field, named for World War I aviator and test pilot Lieutenant Eugene Hoy Barksdale (1896-1926).

Air Force Global Strike Command, activated Aug. 7, 2009, is a major command with its headquarters at Barksdale Air Force Base. AFGSC is responsible for the nation's three intercontinental ballistic missile wings, the Air Force’s entire bomber force, to include B-52, B-1 and B-2 wings, the Long Range Strike Bomber program, Air Force Nuclear Command, Control and Communications (NC3) systems, and operational and maintenance support to organizations within the nuclear enterprise.

The emblem of the 2d Bomb Wing reflects a proud heritage almost as old as American air power. In the shape of an Air Force shield, the emblem is divided at the top into five perpendicular stripes. The colors of the stripes -- black and primitive green -- are those that the wing bore as part of the Army Air Service during World War I. The three primitive green stripes represent the three major offensives in which the wing participated during that war: St. Mihiel, Lorraine and Meuse-Argonne.

The white fleur de lis at the top symbolizes France, the theater of operations for the wing's World War I achievements. The lower portion of the shield is in Air Force golden yellow, charged with four aerial bombs in ultramarine blue, not only representing the original four combatant squadrons assigned during World War I, but also suggesting the unit's present mission as a heavy bombardment wing of Air Combat Command.

Yes. I’ve been enjoying the cooler weather. Well, except for today, when it got up into the mid-80s. But tomorrow will be nicer I think.

Hope it’s been that nice there, too. When will you get to visit the kids again?

It has been quite pleasant here, but tomorrow we are getting smacked with a major cold front, lower than average temps. Sheesh.

Hope to get to spend Christmas again in North Carolina, already alerted the boys, lol!

Fingers crossed that you get to do that! I’m sure they and your beautiful grandkids are really ready to see you again!

I hope to go see our kids sometime before the first of the year. Just not sure when yet.

We’ll both be getting that cold front. I think the coldest it’ll get here is high 30s. Not ideal, but dang. I’m so tired of summer. LOL!

Hey there, radu!

Hope you had a great day today. How much rain did you end up with?

It was waaaaay too warm here today...84, but we’re getting a cold front overnight tonight, so tomorrow will be different for sure. I’m not unhappy about that. LOL!
