In Defense of Curtis Sliwa: Don’t Ask Republicans to Bail out Democrats

New polling showing that former Governor Andrew Cuomo has cut slightly into socialist Zohran Mamdani’s lead in the race for New York City mayor has led to a flurry of calls from both sides of the aisle this week for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa to drop out of the race. But Republicans shouldn’t be asked to surrender to clean up Democrats’ messes.

According to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average, Mamdani now leads Cuomo by 17.1 points, 45.3 percent to 27.9 percent, with Sliwa trailing in a distant third at 14.1 percent. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams dropped out of the race in September, but his name will still appear on the ballot, and he enjoys 6.6 percent support.

Most surveys show that if the election were a choice between just Mamdani and Cuomo, Mamdani’s lead would shrink to single digits – perhaps giving Cuomo a path to victory. This has created a flood of pressure on Sliwa to withdraw from the contest and throw his support behind Cuomo to defeat the dreaded Mamdani.

“Swallow the bitter pill, Curtis Sliwa – quit the race to stop Zohran Mamdani,” The New York Post Editorial Board demanded on Monday. Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman and grocery store magnate John Catsimatidis have also urged Sliwa to drop out, as has Cuomo himself and other Mamdani opponents in New York Democrat circles.

So far, however, Sliwa has refused to withdraw. “It’s the Democrats who created Mamdani and who embraced him and who nourished him, who supported him,” Sliwa argued during an appearance on Nate Friedman’s show late last week. “How dare you people who know nothing about politics suggest that everybody who’s going to vote for me is suddenly going to be reborn and say, ‘we love Andrew...’”

In 2021, Democratic Mayor-elect Eric Adams’ tally finished at 754,000 votes, leaving him with close to 66% of the vote-share compared to Republican Curtis Sliwa’s 27%, or 312,000 total votes.

I feel like it’s the early oughts all over again. All the polls, media, and “smart people” want a Republican to drop out so two looters masquerading as a Democrat and an Independent can enjoy their race uncontested.

Oh, it’s down to single digits and Sliwa tips the balance towards Mamdani? Oh, of course he does. Sure. I believe that... …Why would they say anything else?

If the left’s MO is to cheat to win, I think they would manipulate to data to make Sliwa look like a spoiler, too.

NYC will quickly go the way of Dearborn and Minneapolis.

You are offered the choice of serving a cup of hemlock or a cup of cyanide or not serving anything.

You are told that you should serve the cyanide because it is quicker and more "humane". If you do not service the cyanide you will be responsible for the horrible death of the people who will drink the hemlock.

You say but I did not give them any poison and they will tell you that it is still your fault.

This is a lie of course.

You had nothing to do with it.

Tell them to take a long long walk off of a very short pier.

You can not save people who do not want to be saved.

So stop trying. Do not be guilted into doing something that you know is wrong because it will make someone else feel better.

On Newsmax tonight, Dick Morris said that Sliwa actually has a chance. One of the Robs said that Dick usually is right about his predictions. I don’t know about that, though.

Hard to call Sliwa a ‘republican’ when he only just switched party’s to run for mayor. I don’t support any one of these slugs, but Sliwa probably couldn’t even ‘run’ a pretzel cart. He sure can run his mouth though.

New York has a great deal farther to fall than Dearborn and Minneapolis. A capitalist center of gravity, a Communist mayor can topple it as a financial capital. When The communist comes to power I predict he will be greeted as a reformer my many, do a few things well to help the welfare-poor but within six months the bottom will drop out and he will be forced to resign amid scandal and corruption. He will not serve out his full term and when he starts to build upon early successes he will rip out the city worse than 9-11. It will be the death of the Democratic Party.

I don’t know about that, though.

Well, I sure do... Morris was right about Trump making a comeback and being elected a second time, but then who didn't know that? His track record of predictions was dismal before that easy call. So no, Dick's no political oracle.

The flaw in the push for Sliwa to drop out is that it presumes that his voters - or a significant number of them - will shift their support to Cuomo. More likely the majority will just sit it out rather than vote for bad or worse.

On a side note, the population of NYC has dropped 326,118 in four years since the census. With six years of the same drop, NYS will lose one state rep. and that loss will be from New York City.

New York State
2020......20,201,249......-334,001......-1.65%
2024......19,867,248

New York City
2020......8,804,190......-326,118......-3.70%
2024......8,478,072

90% of NYS population loss is from NYC.

2021 Vote Totals 753,801 + 312,385 = 1,066,186 total votes out of 8.8 million. 12% of the 2020 population voted.

If Sliwa drops out, it won’t help Cuomo. Many of Sliwas voters will “go fishing” on Election Day.

Maybe off topic, but, I understand in the primary New York does rank choice voting.

But in the general election, only a plurality is needed. The winner does not need to have a majority of the vote. There is no ranked choice voting in the general election.

I know nothing will change for this election, but it would be great if they had runoff elections if nobody got fifty percent. If they had such a system, then everyone could coalesce around the second place winner in the runoff election. Instead, we will see an openly socialist candidate win without majority support.

October surprise! Ask Cuomo how much he loves N.Y. city. Enough to withdraw and ask his voters to support Sliwa? In return Sliwa will ask Cuomo to be his advisor? I’m having a John Lennon moment!

Coomo is the scorpion. Republican voters are the frog. If Republicans vote for Coomo and he wins, he’ll immediately sting Republican voters.

Mayor Eric Adams dropped out of the race in September, but his name will still appear on the ballot, and he enjoys 6.6 percent support.

So Adams voters are sticking with Adams.

If Sliwa dropped out, his voters will likely still vote for him.

Whatever his party registration, he's been a crime fighter almost all his adult life.
