Former NYC Mayor Bloomberg donates $500,000 to Bennet campaign

Bloomberg's donation to Bennet's Super PAC is by far the largest single donation.

US Senator Michael Bennet promises more affordable housing in Colorado if he wins the 2026 governor's race

A windfall for the Colorado gubernatorial campaign of Sen. Michael Bennet from former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The Colorado Secretary of State's records show Bloomberg donated $500,000 to Bennet's super PAC "Rocky Mountain Way." It is by far the single-largest donation.

Bloomberg, a billionaire philanthropist, was a three-term mayor of New York City and candidate for president.

The Colorado Democratic primary for the 2026 governor's race is between Sen. Bennet and Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser.

Denver7 Anchor Shannon Ogden spoke with University of Denver political science professor Seth Masket about the impact Bloomberg's donation will have on the primary race.

"It certainly helps out Bennet. It also emphasizes Bennet's ties to sort of national Democratic political figures — stuff that he's been burnishing over his years in the Senate. (Mean)while Weiser is still a little bit ahead in the money race and I believe more of his support comes from within Colorado," said Masket.

Bennet has served in the Senate since 2009 and ran for president in 2020.

Bennet's campaign for Colorado governor announced it raised more than $946,000 in the second reporting period of his campaign bringing in more than $2.6 million in the first six months.

Phil Weiser for Governor's website says it topped $3.8 million at the end of the third quarter of this year.

There are nearly 20 Republican candidates running for governor.

Term limits prohibit Gov. Jared Polis from seeking reelection.

Actually, the more worrisome thing to me is Jena Griswold running for Attorney General.

Just think how much better our country would be with if donations to political campaigns could only be made by people who lived in the candidate’s jurisdiction, whether it was a town, city or state.

Meanwhile, as of October 2025, the Republican primary field includes at least 19 candidates.

No wonder they lose. With so many candidates, no one can get a good clear cohesive message out.

When it’s that much money, yes, but I just got a Winsome for Governor T-shirt though I don’t live in Virginia. I’m also donating what little I can to Brandon Herrera, though I don’t live in Texas.

...if donations to political campaigns could only be made by people who lived in the candidate’s jurisdiction,

Perhaps even better: only made by individual voters eligible to vote in the election for the candidate/proposition, and excluding "groups", pacs, etc.

Those voters, after all, are the only ones who have a bona fide interest in the election.

Michael Bloomberg only ran as a Republican for Mayor of NY City, because he knew that no RAT would get elected after Rudy Giuliani. And the NY State Republican Committee let it happen, because they are worthless.

When Giuliani was elected Mayor, the NY City Council changed the law from no term limits for Mayor, to only two terms. Rudy's term was up in 2001. In the aftermath of 9/11, Rudy asked the City Council if he could remain in office so he could see NY City restored. The City Council refused. Bloomberg comes along, gets elected, and after his two terms are almost up, he asks the City Council if he can get a third term. He'd changed to an Independent by then. City Council says, "sure, no problem Mike" and he gets a third term. Bloomberg leaves office, and the City Council changes the Mayors term of office back to two. Not long after, Bloomberg went back to being the RAT he'd been his whole life.
