President Donald Trump’s working lunch with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday turned acrimonious when the US leader insisted Ukraine make territorial concessions to Russia to end the war, according to European officials briefed on the meeting.
Trump, who would later endorse a freeze in current battle lines as part of a peace settlement, grew frustrated and raised his voice multiple times, the officials said.
The episode was the latest chapter in the fraught relationship between the two men, and amounted to another shift in Trump’s approach to how the war will be settled.
Last month, after meeting Zelensky in New York, Trump claimed Ukraine might be able to regain all its territory lost to Russia. But now Trump is preparing for another high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, this time in Budapest.
It was after a call with the Russian leader on the eve of the Zelensky meeting that Trump again insisted Kyiv must give up swaths of land for the conflict to end.
Trump shrugged off the apparent reversal on Monday.
“I never said they would win it. I said they could win,” he said of Ukraine at the White House, where he was meeting the prime minister of Australia. “Anything could happen. You know, war is a very strange thing. A lot of bad things happen. A lot of good things happen.”
He said he still believed Ukraine could win, but that he didn’t think it would.

Ukraine can’t concede territory it already lost. It would not be conceding anything, just ending the war.
If Mexico invaded Texas and occupied Brownsville Harlingen and McAllen would we want to concede and give them to Mexico?
Mexican bandit Pancho Villa tried that.

Way past time to deal with the corrupted little man. Trump should have withdrawn all money, weapons and intelligence long ago.
Good thing Trump, Orban and Vlad are planning a meeting in Hungary. Leaving the little St Z and EU out of Peace negotiations....maybe they decide how to carve up Ukraine, giving Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia their historic territory back.....the West and NATO did that to Yugoslavia....why not?
Ukraine should tell Trump, they will gladly hand over the land Russia has taken, right after the US hands over Alaska.
Because asking them that is just as outrageous.
Then let Ukraine handle this alone. Trump could tell them to piss up a rope.
There is no reason to believe a source that wasn't present at the meeting.
But, if Trump didn't say what is claimed, he should have.
This is just more theatre to throw the rabid media off, like the feud between Trump and Musk was.

But every one knows that Putin will not stop, no mater what; he’s on a mission to restore the old USSR, to include surrounding territory buffer zones.
President Trump has no right to insist on Ukrainian surrender of territory.
