One of New York City's most violent neighborhoods has banned uniformed police officers - all in the name of safety.
A two-block corridor in a crime-plagued stretch of Brownsville, along Mother Gaston Boulevard, where shootings and robberies have long terrified residents, was declared a 'police-free zone' for five days earlier this month.
Instead of officers, community patrols moved in under an arrangement funded by the city itself under a controversial initiative known as the Brownsville Safety Alliance (BSA).
The project, once a twice-yearly pilot under former Mayor Bill de Blasio, now runs four times a year and aims to prove that residents can keep the peace on their own.
During its latest operation, from October 7 to 11, uniformed officers were told to stay out of the two-block zone, within the NYPD's 73rd Precinct, from noon to 6pm, leaving a community group called Brownsville In Violence Out to respond to nonviolent calls.

Banning the cops seems like a crazy idea.
You know what would be less crazy? Make murder legal. Allow law-abiding citizens to just start taking out the trash. The number of people committing the crimes is really very small. Just let people kill them.

This program involves giving taxpayer money as ransom to criminal gangs who are free to use it as they wish, for example buying fentanyl. You can’t get more dystopian.
Typical gov’t thinking: “We have a high crime area so let’s fix it by sending out resident volunteers, who have no authority to do anything, and let them patrol the streets for one night once every three months. That’ll fix it!”
So no police in a two-block corridor, for five days.
Wait until Mamdani takes over. NYC hasn’t seen anything yet.

Basically, they were granting police powers to a bunch of volunteers from noon until sunset. It’s a stupid idea. The untrained and unaccountable volunteers will shakedown anyone they please, and rough up kids to smart off to them. They are basically the local Taliban or Hamas or Boko Haram thugs.
Incredibly idiotic idea.

I’m very much in favor of banning police in NYC and in Portland. And, a few other places.
My observation of the failed housing projects in Cincinnati shows me that these thugs drive out all but the low lifes with warrants on them or a role in the crime syndicates.
I’m fine for them to kill each other and anyone who is stupid enough or connected enough to stay. NYC voters chose it; let them live it.
