Trump commutes sentence of former US Rep. George Santos in federal fraud case

President Donald Trump said Friday he had commuted the sentence of former U.S. Rep. George Santos, who is serving more than seven years in federal prison after pleading guilty to fraud and identity theft charges.

The New York Republican was sentenced in April after admitting last year to deceiving donors and stealing the identities of 11 people — including his own family members — to make donations to his campaign.

He reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, in southern New Jersey, on July 25 and is being housed in a minimum security prison camp with fewer than 50 other inmates.

“George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison,” Trump posted on his social media platform. He said he had “just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY.”

“Good luck George, have a great life!” Trump said.

Joseph Murray, one of Santos’ lawyers, said late Friday that the former lawmaker’s family was en route to the prison for his release. Andrew Mancilla, another Santos lawyer, applauded the president “for doing the right thing.”

If Massie had the same voting record as Santos, Trump would have one less headache in dealing with Congress.

I continue to support Trump 101% but I don’t support this action. Santos was a worthless punk and should have served at least a couple years in an EASY prison environment on top of that!

Trump continues to show how tone deaf he is to his base. Maybe his buddy, the king of the redcoats, asked him to do it.

Disgusting.

Two-tiered justice system. Republicans get arrested for things like this while Democrats are off the hook.

I agree. Also with so many issues needing focus, why this ??

Not at all! Over sentencing and abusing this man because he is Republican. Meanwhile murderers, rapists and child abusers get out of jail free. Give it a break and some circumspection!

He’s not been pardoned. He still has a conviction. GS was in solitary most of the time probably because he would get the crap beat out of him for his fabulist ways.

why this ??

Because we have a bunch of hypocrites in charge of our legal system. Trump is pointing it out.

7 years for theft of campaign contributions (AKA BRIBERY) is not "over sentencing". If Trump thinks Santos has been persecuted relative to all the other CORRUPT SCUM in congress, he should be insisting that they are prosecuted too, not DUMBING DOWN OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM with commutations of the worst of the worst.

This is an absolute, fabulous, embarrassment!

Reserve judgment. The President is shrewd and wily. He has a reason for doing this so just wait and see.

This is a bad move. Seriously. It undermines all the “law and order” that administration is claiming. It makes them look like petty democrats looking out their their people.
Boneheaded move.

What I REALLY LIKE about this is that Trump is playing by DEMOCRAT RULES, which includes non-prosecution of their own people, always, and for the politically-connected criminals, they get sprung from jail, as Biden’s girls did by the THOUSANDS just before Trump took office.

So, it’s GREAT to see Trump shoving it both in the face of the Democrats, and in face of the Republicans, who voted, prematurely, to expel him from Congress.

“He reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, in southern New Jersey, on July 25”

Three months for federal fraud seems deficient to me.

My uninformed inclination would probably be to a year or two.

The commutation and pardon power should be to fix the errors the judicial and legislative branches made.

Seven years is way too much, but less than three months is deficient.

"Because you'd be in jail"

"Lock her up! Lock her up!"

"I gave her a pass because she's an ex-president's wife"

TONE DEAF!!
