A Pennsylvania home where George Washington stayed during the Revolutionary War is for sale for $3.295 million.
The house, in Fort Washington, served as the army commander’s headquarters during the White Marsh encampment, which spanned six weeks in late 1777 and culminated in the Battle of White Marsh, after which the British Army retreated to Philadelphia.
Named the Emlen House, the original home was built in 1717 for the Emlens, a prominent Quaker family, to use as a summer retreat. The Colonial house has a fieldstone exterior, a portico and dormer windows.
Sited on 2.64 acres, the three-story home has more than 7,800 square feet of living space, according to the listing with Kim Whetzel and James McFadden of Kurfiss Sotheby’s International Realty.
A recent renovation updated the interiors, modernizing the design with various colored paints while keeping traditional and period features, such as moldings, exposed ceiling beams and exposed brick.
Whetzel and McFadden, who brought the property to the market earlier this month, weren’t immediately available for comment.

There are six bedrooms, five full bathrooms and two half-baths in the home. The primary suite has a fireplace, and in the bathroom there is a freestanding bathtub and a vanity table, listing photos show.
There’s also a back patio that’s accessible from the first floor via French doors, and an extension to the original house added a three-car garage.
The property backs up to the 36-acre Piszek Preserve, made up of woodlands, wetlands, meadows and a stream. The preserved land adds nature and privacy to the home while also guaranteeing nothing will be built there.

I hope someone with a sincere appreciation of its history buys it.
Nice to know someone puts a high value on the former home of the last honest politician.
So I mentally compare the value fetched by this house with $5+ million fetched by Kurt Cobain’s Fender Mustang guitar at auction. And I don’t come up with much.
Gack! That garage absolutely ruins it! Hope the new owners tear it down!
$3.295 Million? It’s a steal! At least it would be called a steal, were it in California. I know. I know, historically that would be impossible. I’m only remarking on how different the ‘going rate’ of big ticket items can be from one side of the country to the other.
A $3. Million Dollar house? Oh, that’s where the Maid’s Grandma In Law is permitted to sleep. Nobody goes there. //
GW had a three carriage garage?
awesome. wish i could see more.
That’s nice. I can’t afford in any case.
One bay was for the lawn tractor and gardening equipment.
Agree.....make a separate garage with a covered walkway to the house
It’s so stupid. George only had two cars. All he ever did with the third bay was sit out there with his buddies on lawn chairs, drinking beers, and making comments about people passing by
$17K annually in property taxes.
Our Founders are spinning.
See my reply #16. :-)
We have hundreds of thousands of houses where George Washington stayed.
$17k in property taxes? That’s based on a much lower transaction probably years ago. That tax bill will skyrocket after the sale
Original mattresses too.
