Remembering how the Iroquois treated missionary Isaac Jogues and his companions.
Among the American left’s new holy days, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is near the top of the list, exceeded only by the left’s holy month: Pride Month. The Biden administration went all-out for Indigenous Peoples’ Day, issuing formal statements and proclamations.
For the left, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is the social justice substitute for Columbus Day. The epic Italian explorer has been cancelled for a host of alleged evils. To progressives, among the worst of Columbus’ transgressions is the colossal sin he shares with other Europeans: he dared to bring Christianity to the continent. For this, he is unforgiven and shown no mercy by today’s Torquemadas of “tolerance.”
The “inclusion” crowd has excluded Columbus and his ilk, such as the despised Junipero Serra, the Spanish missionary who settled California, created the missions up and down the state, and thanks to whom cities throughout the state bear the names of saints. (News flash for the theologically illiterate “educated” in our schools: “San” refers to “Saint.” Those California cities with names like San Francisco and Santa Barbara are actually saint names. Even cities like Ventura and Los Angeles are Christian names.) As with statues of Columbus, statues of St. Serra (canonized by Pope Francis no less) have been defaced, decapitated, and torn down everywhere.
Here at The American Spectator, we are not ignoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Each year, your humble editor posts a piece remembering notable natives. We want to do our part to educate the masses. I’m lending a hand of assistance to liberals in their quest to provide a fuller education to today’s youth, especially regarding the pristine peoples...

As a descendant of pioneers who were captured and killed by Mohawks in 1704 and attacked by Cherokee and Shawnee tribes in the 1760s and ‘90s, I celebrate Columbus Day.
I am Scots/Irish and Tsalagi (Cherokee), but I believe in Columbus Day...NOT the so-called Indigenous Peoples Day....
Agreed. “Political Correctness” is for castrati.
No, nnt really. Just give me Columbus Day. Indigenous day is like Juneteenth day. Not relevant in my opinion.
The people crossing the Bering land bridge before the tribes we know about must have resented the newcomers barging in.
Good time to remember the old 1961 comedy album by Stan Freberg.
Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America, Volume 1.
In a scene where Christopher Columbus is “discovered” on the beach by a Native American, Columbus wants to cash a check to open “America’s first Italian restaurant”.
Columbus: “If you’ll direct me to the nearest bank, I’ll get a check cashed”.
Native American: “You out of luck today, banks closed”.
Columbus: “Oh? Why?”.
Native American: “Columbus Day!”.
Columbus: “Oh, yeah... we going out on that joke?”.
It makes zero sense (which I know is part for the course for liberals) for them to denounce celebrating Columbus Day for the things that occurred, but then celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day when many of those people committed the same acts they claim to abhor about Columbus and his crew - to each other, over longer periods of time, and just as bad if not far worse. Moreover, they warred with each other and took over each others’ territory / land.
As usual, the liberals aren’t actually upset by things like that - they just use them in certain contexts to promote agendas and narratives. If they actually were upset by those things then they would be against both...that I could respect.
Those “indigenous” people, stole the land from somebody else.
Or, as I now like to refer to the day, “Indignant Peoples’ Day”.
I saw that yesterday, I forget where.
Did Antifa burn anything down?
When my refrigerator calendar had “ Indigenous People Day “ on it a couple of years ago, I marked it out with an ink pen. My DIL was over and saw it, she busted out laughing and took a picture to show her other secret Conservative teacher friends at school.
We celebrate Columbus Day in this household, even though I’ve been told my great-grandmother was Native American on my Dad’s side (he was adopted). As best as I can find, I have about the same amount of NA blood in me as Pocahontas Warren, but I bet, a little bit more. Due to the fact that I am a brunette with brown eyes, high cheekbones, and I tan really easily.
Thank you, Christopher Columbus!
My calendar still says “Columbus Day” & as far as I’m concerned that is what it is & will continue to be. If the Left had their way, almost every holiday would get a name change.
Which ones? There were like 560 different tribes then.
Five hundred years ago, pretty much everyone around the world was brutal.
The racist implication is that whites were more brutal than Aztecs or Mongols or Persians or Bantu or Turks.
You can no longer guilt us into self-defeating actions.
I’m with you on this one.
Correct.
I’m celebrating CRO-MAGNON REMEMBERANCE DAY.
