The Justice Department is preparing criminal charges against John Bolton, Donald Trump's former national security adviser, according to exclusive reporting from MSNBC.
Prosecutors in Maryland are said to be weighing whether to seek a grand jury indictment or move faster by filing a direct court complaint, possibly next week.
Bolton, 76, served under Trump from 2018 to 2019 and has since become one of his fiercest critics. A longtime Republican foreign policy hawk, he has publicly blasted Trump's handling of classified material and foreign policy decisions.
MSNBC's Carol Leonnig reported that acting U.S. Attorney Kelly Hayes believes there's a strong case that Bolton mishandled classified information found at his Maryland home. FBI agents spent hours searching the property and left with multiple boxes of materials.
Bolton's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said the records are decades old and typical of what veteran officials retain.
Reuters and The Washington Post have confirmed that Bolton is under federal investigation. Both outlets cited court filings showing that the FBI seized cellphones, computers, and folders labeled "Trump I-IV" in an August search.
The Post said the inquiry involves potential Espionage Act violations.
If charged, Bolton will be the third Trump adversary to face prosecution in recent weeks, joining former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

I believe so. He is a small fish. He is old and doesn’t have the resources to pay a fortune for lawyers.

Veteran officials are not allowed to possess or take-home classified documents no matter how old they are. The agency or office he worked for would retain them and give him needed access to them when required. If declassified, he could then get copies, but originals would never be given to the individual.
They did the same with Biden. As soon as he discovered he accidentally stole classified documents for decades he gave them back so it’s ok. They never mentioned once that he was never allowed to possess any of them. They also never mentioned that President Trump could retain material due to the Presidential Records Act.
All of his Defense strategies have been refined for Democrat prosecutors, Democrat judges, Democrat juries, and Democrat talking points, in large Democrat cities.
Republicans in legal trouble frequently hire attorneys like Lowell because of their stellar Defense record.
More often than not, Lefty Lawyers fumble the ball when they try to explain or define a Republican client in a Hard Left city.
Since Bolton has swerved Hard Left politically in recent years, Lowell will have no problem getting an acquittal or hung jury.
Bolton iss an extremely unlikable defendant. He will not risk a trial to a jury. If he can’t plead out to no jail time, we will waive the jury and go to trial to a lefty judge.

One of the perks of working with classified documents is that you can’t be asked to take your work home. It does, however, occasionally make for some long hours *at* work.
