2026 will be the 'year of the used EV,' analyst says

The price of used electric vehicles has come down to levels comparable with gasoline cars, a dynamic poised to boost their popularity despite the loss of a federal tax incentive for EVs, according to auto analysts.

In August, the price premium for used EVs relative to used vehicles with a gasoline engine narrowed to just $897, on average, the smallest price gap on record, according to Cox Automotive.

The average list price for used EVs was $34,704 in August, down 1.1% from July and 2.6% from a year earlier, it found.

This price tag excludes a federal tax credit that ended after Sept. 30, after Republicans scrapped it as part of a multitrillion-dollar legislative package in July. That tax break was worth up to $4,000 for used EVs (and $7,500 for new EVs) — meaning the average used EV cost less than its gasoline counterpart after incentives. Consumers bought nearly 41,000 used EVs in August, up 59% from a year earlier, Cox data shows.

Analysts expect that momentum to continue, driven in large part by affordability even absent the federal tax break.

2026 will be “the year of the used EV,” said Scott Case, the CEO of Recurrent, an EV market research firm.

"By contrast, the market for new electric vehicles is likely to struggle for the rest of 2025 and into next year, analysts said.

Average new EV prices in August were $57,245, representing a nearly $9,100 premium over the average gasoline car, according to Cox Automotive.

That doesn’t include the now-expired $7,500 federal tax credit, which brought new EVs closer to price parity with their gasoline counterparts.

'The tax credit helped get a lot of butts in seats,' Aaron Bragman, Detroit bureau chief for Cars.com, told CNBC. 'It helped a lot of people get into EVs.”

I don’t think so.

The only thing most people I know would want less than new EV is a used EV.

Get rid of your EV just before the batteries go belly-up.

Good plan!

I sure am confused. I thought the free market would apply. If a good product was offered at a good price, people would buy it on their own.

Oh, well. I guess Big Brother knows better.

EV technology just isn’t there yet.
Democrats are pretty “limited”,
they want everybody to adopt Shit
they believes work.
I’d love to have an electric car!
superior acceleration, quiet
Potentially much less environmental
damage, but the technology isn’t there yet!
They cannot exceed what a fossil fueled
car can do.
Recharge in a few minutes and go for hours.
I’d take a horse over an EV!

I have a friend with a used EV. He can’t get any dealer to take it as a trade in.

Prices crash and CNBC claims it means they are popular.

“I have a friend with a used EV. He can’t get any dealer to take it as a trade in.”

The only chance he possibly has is trading it in on a new EV.

Did CNBC drop Bragman's remark that "Free money from Uncle Sugar always gooses the market"?

Or did he not even say that and I made it up?

After months of construction with lots of dangerous-looking high voltage hazard signs posted, the Wawa here just opened a bank of about 10 ev charging terminals. Every one of them was connected to a car.

I’m waiting for them to install a pump for “No Ethanol” fuel so I can feed my CBX, lawnmower, leaf vac, and snowblower.

After they do that, I’ll expect a pump for “Leaded Gas.”

Back to the future.

“I don’t think so. The only thing most people I know would want less than new EV is a used EV.”

exactly ....

‘In August, the price premium for used EVs relative to used vehicles with a gasoline engine narrowed to just $897, on average, the smallest price gap on record, according to Cox Automotive.”

the problem with the above is that age/mileage doesn’t affect the number of times a used gas engine vehicle’s gas tank can be refilled, whereas used EVs have been literally used up because of the progressive degradation of the EV battery to hold a full charge ... once that battery is used up, it’ll actually cost the owner big bucks to dispose of the vehicle ...
