Meanwhile, Republicans seem very comfortable with a shutdown.
The government is now in its first shutdown since 2019 — and there is little sign that either party will soon give in to the other side’s demands and turn the lights back on.
There are already signs some Democrats may want to cave, however.
Hours before the midnight funding deadline, Senate Republicans blocked a spending proposal from Democrats, 47-53, that would have funded the government and extended subsidies for Affordable Care Act health care plans, giving people on the Obamacare exchanges the certainty that Democrats say they need ahead of open enrollment in November.
Democrats answered by blocking the GOP’s bill, depriving the House-passed legislation of the 60 votes it needs to advance in the Senate.
Still, not every Democrat was on board with leadership’s strategy of blocking the bill.
Three senators who caucus with the Democrats voted with Republicans on the GOP funding measure, bringing the final tally to 55-45 on Tuesday night — short of the 60-vote threshold, but enough to show an early division in the party as the government enters a shutdown.
Not every Democrat was on board with leadership’s strategy of blocking the bill.
The trio of Democrats who voted with Republicans weren’t a complete surprise. Sen. Angus King of Maine, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, has sounded undecided on the Democratic strategy. He suggested to CNN on Tuesday that he was concerned with the ramifications of shutting down the government.
“But I’m also concerned about the ramifications of one-sided government,” King said, an apparent reference to the partisan way Republicans have gone about drafting their spending proposal.
King said he voted to keep the government open “because a shutdown will give President Trump the ability to do far greater...”

Is Nancy going on a government funded family vacation ? LOL
I give it a week or less. If it lasts 2 weeks I’ll be shocked. $50 says its open by this time next week.
Libtard reps are too. Murkowski, Collins, a few more perennial rinos usually right there too...
Vance sounded like he wanted to negotiate the Obamacare crap. Republicans are going to cave.
“”””The government is shut down. Some Democrats may already want to cave.””””
The writer of this story thinks that if the Dem Senators do cave, they will get to vote on the House CR that was on the table.
However, the Dem Senators may find that the GOP Senators will be adding new spending constraints if the Dems cave.
Considering free healthcare for illegals while the rest of us have to pay is is NOT going to be a winning platform with most of Americans, they should be rethinking their position.
I’m surprised there are any democrats with enough connection to reality to make that association.
When does Rand Paul cave?
“”””When does Rand Paul cave?””””
Wasn’t it Rand Paul who voted with the Dems to vote against the House CR?
Yes, unlike the Dems, he thinks the CR is too much spending.
I would think, he would cave when there is just enough Dems to pass it. I do not think, he would be the one vote to ditch it.
Those senators sometimes play games. They vote their way, if the bill is failing anyway or if the bill is passing by wide margin. In close vote, they vote with the party, even if they do not like it.
In congress voting procedures, there is always a time to change the vote at the end, when the count is in.
Any many congresspeople do take advantage of it!
Well, duh. Most of their donations are laundered through government programs.
The money for illegals’ health care gets funneled into demonicRATS’ campaigns.
These people with their own agenda...are in the wrong...and that includes Rand Paul...
No...the subsidies expire at the end of the year so the Dems have no reason to insist this is one of their reasons to disagree with the Republicans. It’s a big fat lie.
I want it shut down long enough for Trump to DOGE EVERYTHING
I thought only his moustache caucuses with Democrats. It does have a life of its own.
I think the republican senators will disappoint us again. I don’t see them as solid as the dems in the standoff once it goes past the weekend.
Republicans are going to "cave" because if they don't, they're going to lose big in 2026.
The dirty little secret is that Republican states and House districts are filled with white people on welfare.
If democrat senators want to work for DOGE:
“Let Them.”😀
