Kraus and his wife Theresia - who would today be 92 and 83, respectively - have continued to receive direct-deposit Social Security payments into their bank accounts, but neighbors said the couple suddenly disappeared without a trace around 2017. The person briefed on the matter said law enforcement agencies presume the couple are deceased.

Here's a hypothetical situation for you. Lets say you want to retire to your ocean side beach house in Honduras. You currently have your company pension and your Social Security directed deposited into your US bank, such as Comerica.
You open up an account with a bank in Honduras that accepts ACH transfers and have your monthly deposits transferred to the Honduran bank.
Somewhere along the line, you eventually die and your young Honduran wife chooses to have you buried in a small local cemetery.
She never informs the Honduran bank of your death, she never informs your Comerica bank of your death, she never informs the SSA of your death and she never informs your company pension plan administrator of your death.
She could conceivably continue to receive the monthly payments for eternity.

That may not have been planned out so well. A young girlfriend would have been the better choice.......
