The department said the latest action is the consequence of three events, including the department's determination that Harvard has violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and allegations that Harvard has taken steps to secure $1 billion in bonds.
The Department of Education on Friday placed Harvard University on heightened cash monitoring status, which requires the university to use its own funds to disburse federal student aid before drawing funds from the government.
The department said that students at the Ivy League school will still have access to federal aid but that the initial disbursements will need to be covered by the school as a means to ensure the school is spending government funds appropriately. Harvard sits on a $53 billion endowment, CNN reported earlier this year.
The department said the latest action is the consequence of three events, including the department's determination that Harvard has violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and allegations that Harvard has taken steps to secure $1 billion in bonds.
“Today’s actions follow Harvard’s own admission that there are material concerns about its financial health," Education Secretary Linda McMahon said in a statement. "As a result, Harvard must now seek reimbursement after distributing federal student aid and post financial protection so that the Department can ensure taxpayer funds are not at risk. While Harvard remains eligible to participate in the federal student aid program for now, these actions are necessary to protect taxpayers.”
The order marks the latest escalation in Harvard's funding fight with the Trump administration. Harvard President Alan Garber has accused the federal government of attempting to exert “unprecedented and improper control" over the Ivy League school.
President Donald Trump has also recommended the Internal Revenue Service rescind the school's tax-exempt status after the school said it would...

I think this is what we voted for
YAY!!!
Hee,heee, heee, ain’t life grand!
You want to see universities put people in productive areas of study and not make students become debt slaves? Get them on the hook for the collecting the bill and the taxpayers out of it.
This is the way.
Harvard demands it’s right to force waitresses and blue collar men to fund them, never mind that 50 billion dollar endowment.
I just don’t see how we are going to get rid of this department. This Department of Education.
It keeps getting entrenched instead of a request to Congress to abolish.
No welfare for the rich. By which I mean elite institutions with multibillion dollar endowments.
Striking while the iron is hot. Every institution at the same time.
There was never a plan to get rid of it. It’s been right sized and moved into an exiting department.
No reason Harvard can’t do this. Albert Einstein College of Medicine got a $1 billion donation in 2024 and is using investment returns from the principle to provide free tuition for all of its students forever.
I guess we can't get rid of it. But we can downsize it to one employee.
Harvard boss: “To deviate from our customary erudition I will say—— we got deep pockets and alligator arms.”
Sounds reasonable. Hey Harvard, use your own funds. The university receives billions in endowment funds. They can afford it.
53 billion will purchase quite a few textbooks.
The word, “education” is not in the Constitution. Keep our tax money out, period.
I obtained two degrees in the hard sciences. I paid for the first by roughnecking in the oil field and my second by my later work in the oilfield. I did make a bank loan of which I paid off early. I was broke at the end of my last year of pharmacy school.
The skyrocketing cost of university is a direct function of government financial programs for university students. The logic of the university is, “they can get the money via government student loans and we will take it.” My tuition fees were reasonable in the 70s and later in the 80s. The problem with tuition is the federal government.
Circa 1966 the administration building was one wing of the chemistry building, about 10 offices. Today it is a three story behemoth about ten times greater. That is the problem.
