Bowdoin College conservative students went to bed afraid Sunday after administrators informed the campus of “credible” threats that prompted the cancellation of a vigil honoring Charlie Kirk, a student leader told The College Fix by phone and email.
“Despite being the recipients of this ‘supposed threat,’ we have not been informed of anything else, so many of my members are living in complete fear,” Bowdoin College Conservatives President Zak Asplin said Monday.
Safa Zaki, president of the private Maine college, issued an announcement Sunday night that the situation was investigated and no longer deemed to be a threat.
However, in an interview Monday morning, Asplin said neither police nor administrators reached out to provide details to the conservative student leaders about the nature of the threat.
“We went to bed really scared,” he told The Fix. “I’ve had students come to me crying their eyes out.”
Asplin and other students organized the vigil for the slain conservative leader for 7:15 p.m. Sunday on Bowdoin’s museum steps. Hundreds of similar events have taken place on campuses across the country since Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed at a speaking event Wednesday at Utah Valley University.
However, at 7 p.m., campus security sent out an email alert, stating the vigil would be postponed due to “credible” threats, The Maine Wire first reported.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we are postponing the vigil that was scheduled for this evening at 7:15 p.m. by the Bowdoin College Conservatives,” the email stated.
“In the past 15 minutes, we were informed by the Maine State Police of external threats connected to the event. While details remain limited, the information we received is credible enough to require us to take immediate precautionary steps,” it stated.
Two hours later, President Zaki sent another campus-wide email stating that police investigated the matter and “determined that there was no continuing threat.”
Zaki said the information provided by police indicated “individuals not affiliated with Bowdoin planned to come to campus to disrupt the event and cause harm.”
“The bar for the College to postpone a student event is extraordinarily high and the circumstances in this case met that bar,” she wrote, adding that “living together across divisions and differences will take our patience, kindness, and respect for one another.”
When contacted by The Fix, Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said authorities informed the college of a “potential threat” regarding the vigil.
“The Maine Information Analysis Center (MIAC) received an anonymous report about a potential threat related to the vigil. While they were unable to validate the information, they immediately notified Bowdoin College,” Moss said via email Monday.
For Asplin, however, questions remain.
He expressed puzzlement that the threat was “external” because Bowdoin College Conservatives only advertised the event internally to students.
He also wondered about censorship being a motive, telling The Fix that administrators had brought up the possibility of canceling the vigil before the threat was known.
“The administration was all too willing to cancel it,” he said.
Given what happened, Asplin told The Fix conservative students also are concerned about another event they have planned this fall on campus. He said he just requested additional security from the college and is waiting to hear back.
“The atmosphere here has always been incredibly oppressive against conservative students, in the minority completely, and now, it is even worse,” he said.
The college did not respond directly to The Fix’s inquiries about communication between the conservative students and administrators about the threat. The Fix also asked about plans to reschedule the vigil and efforts to support free speech on campus.
“Based on information from the Maine State Police, the College decided to postpone the vigil,” spokesperson Douglas Cook responded in an email Monday afternoon. “The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors will always be the College’s top priority. We are grateful for the partnership of our law enforcement agencies.”
The Maine State Police have responded to our request for all communications with Bowdoin College: "We have no records responsive to your request."
I asked them to clarify that they did not communicate with @BowdoinCollege, as Bowdoin claimed in its security alert, but they've not responded. @MEStatePolice

A once great institution.
Good work, Bowdoin. Maybe you should start spelling it BowDown College.
Maybe it's a tough call, but courage was what Charlie was all about. Take a stand against evil.
Bowdoin College has changed a lot since Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was a student there, a Brigadier General in the Union Army, Medal of Honor winner, Governor of Maine, and President of the College.
Who's going to stop them?
TPUSA got 54k requests for new to set up newhighschoolchapters they want truth honestly and a future. They don’t trust their parents they seek answers these chapters will get better and more desirable.
Bowdoin College conservatives need to grow a pair, trust in the LORD, and go about their business. That’s what Charlie Kirk did.
Why is a f**king Egyptian woman running a U.S. college in Maine??
I think Bowdoin is where the commie Mandami went for his “education.”
No threat but in an abundance of caution we are cancelling all conservative speakers and events until the second coming if not longer. How many DEI boxes did Bowdoin’s new president Safa Zaki manage to check?

Hold the vigil anyway.
When my boys were college-bound I told them they could live at home, rent free, I would pay their tuition and books, but they also had to work part time (evenings, weekends) while going to school. And it had to be a Tech College or an apprenticeship of some sort. I REFUSED To pay for a State Indoctrination Station.
One of the three took me up on it. He’s a City Planner, now.
WHY are Conservative Parents with Conservative Offspring sending them to Socialist schools in the first place?
We have to admit it - the education system in this country has been corrupted and BROKEN for a very long time. But there are ways around it. Tech Schools, 2-year degrees - especially Medical, Apprenticeships, Trade Schools, etc.
It’s not as if people don’t have a choice/say in how to spend their education dollars.
And, yes. I GET that kids shouldn’t have to CHOOSE, that ALL SCHOOLS should be unbiased bastions of higher learning. But, it is what it is these days, and it’s not going to change anytime soon. Why purposefully put yourself somewhere where you are not wanted and now, possibly in danger?
*SHRUG*
Why are so many foreigners district judges? And why do so many rule against President Trump?
Have you been living under a rock? It is virtually mandatory that candidates for high visibility positions at elite colleges check at least 2 DEI boxes and preferably 3 or 4.

Cancellations like this are what move the shooter’s act to the “terrorism” category. Terrorize the citizens with the goal of making them shut up and back off.
My niece gave her mom, my sister, some encouraging info. She said that in her neck of the woods in the Atlanta area some public schools are being closed. So many parents are pulling their kids out so they can home school or go to private school that public schools can’t afford to stay open.
It is time to activate the Hard Hat brigade.
