The Tulsa County Public Defender’s Office has become embroiled in controversy following a social media post by assistant attorney Chance Bennett, who commented “Good” in response to the news of the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Tulsa County Sheriff Vic Regalado strongly condemned the comment, calling it a “total and absolute lack of human decency” and stating that “we cannot celebrate the death of another human being.”
County Prosecutor Steve Kunzweiler also expressed his disapproval, noting that Bennett’s behavior is “inappropriate” for someone holding a legal position in Oklahoma.
The Public Defender’s Office issued a statement clarifying that Bennett’s opinions do not reflect those of the office and that, while Bennett has the right to free speech, her behavior is inappropriate for someone representing the justice system.
Additionally, it was reported that Bennett had defended her social media post, arguing that being glad Kirk could no longer cause harm was not the same as rejoicing in his murder.
However, this stance was widely criticized by local and national leaders, who called for her removal and emphasized the importance of maintaining human decency and rejecting political violence.
The controversy has sparked a debate over professional ethics and the responsibility of public officials in both their official duties and personal conduct.
It is possible for a person to hold vile opinions and still perform a job adequately but why should any defendant (who doesn’t get to choose PD) have to risk their life on it?
Atorneys, any attorney, who is in the public employ cannot celebrate the murder of anyone. Private attorneys can say as stupid of stuff as they want.
Fire her! ( But if it’s up to the mayor, that’s not likely. Hopefully, her off superior can fire her).
Is she going to vigorously defend a MAGA client or sabotage his case because she hates his politics?
No way she should continue to work as a taxpayer paid public defender.
Fire his ass. Pronto.
His/her....whatever. Don’t care. Just get them out of there. The public can have no trust or confidence in someone who celebrates the murder of others for expressing their opinions.
Wouldn’t need a public defenders office if every family had a “Cousin Vinny”.
I thought it said ‘Tulsi defenders.
I was thinking, NOW what blather are the Libs & RINOs saying about her?
Never mind.
That’s okay, I first read it as “TESLA”.............
The bar for cancelling someone, i.e. holding them accountable for their words and expressed thoughts, should be extremely high. With that said, if we cannot agree that someone in a political position, elected or appointed, applauding, excusing, or mocking the assassination of someone for their ideological or religious beliefs is unfit to hold said position, then we have a larger problem than just them being vile people.
“arguing that being glad Kirk could no longer cause harm”
She, however, CAN cause harm in the position she’s in. And it’s a guarantee that she will if given the chance.
Decent people are learning that government employees can’t be trusted to ensure our safety. We’ve seen examples at times. FEMA telling employees not to rescue TN & NC flood victims with Trump signs in their yards. East Palestine victims being ignored in spite of toxic chemicals.
Now we realized it’s in every facet of government.
Exactly. She and her defenders will screw every MAGA every time.
Lol! Funny how all three alternative choices already have plenty of Talking Points. Tulsa/ Tulsi/ Tesla.
Enough ‘outrage’ for the whole family!
