President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order on Friday to rename the Department of Defense the "Department of War," a White House official told Reuters Thursday.
The order would authorize Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the Pentagon and subordinate officials to use "secondary titles" such as "Secretary of War," "Department of War" and "Deputy Secretary of War" in official correspondence, public communications and ceremonial contexts, according to a White House fact sheet.

Thank you, President Trump, for calling things for what they are. Honesty.
Good move.
As el Rushbo was wont to say, “Words mean things.”
The War Department existed for 158 years, from August 7, 1789, to September 18, 1947,[1] when it split into the Department of the Army and the Department of the Air Force under the National Security Act of 1947, joining the Department of the Navy to form the National Military Establishment (NME). In 1949, the NME was renamed the Department of Defense (DOD).

Back to basics.
Renaming anything doesn’t change what it does. And they and we know what that can be. We are not a waring nation. Our military is a deterrent to war, not the cause of it or only intent to fight it. The new name may display fierceness and power, but the old name displayed that we don’t want to lose people to get peace so why fight? And out capacity tells them they will lose too.
We are the only animal on earth that has the ability to reason. Why throw it away? War is the last effort, fighting it is the failure of the first.

You don’t win a war by defense but by attack — no “Department of Defense” ever won a war; see the histories. But it seems to be a standard civilian reaction to scream for defensive tactics as soon as they do notice a war. They then want to run the war — like a passenger trying to grab the controls away from the pilot in an emergency.Robert Heinlein, Starship Troopers
We shouldn't fight wars unless it's absolutely necessary and we are in it to win (WWII).
War, for the United States, should be the actions taken that are necessary to make some other country refrain from or stop attacking us. That means killing them and breaking their stuff, until they stop. And then making sure they aren't able to do it again any time soon.
Our military exists to conduct war when necessary, and to prepare for it during peacetime. That mission is of paramount importance to our nation's survival, and so calling it the Department of War seems fairly straightforward to me.
How about “Department of Scream Like A Little Girl And Run Away”?
In reality, this is as silly and pointless as renaming the Gulf of Mexico.
Cue the injunction, 3, 2, 1 . . .
The purpose of the military? Simple, kill people and break stuff up as a instrument of national will. Thats not defense, its offense.
Patton is famous for saying ““Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.””
Again...offense, not defense. Yes, the military can and does act in a defensive way when necessary but that is not its primary purpose as an instrument of national will.
Ha ha. This is rich coming from you. Why don’t they do this in France? Call it Surrender Department, “Sauve Qui Peut” should be the motto. It’s mascot a cheese eating monkey, and of course its white flag. The white feather it’s symbol.
I think you wandered onto the wrong website. DU may be more appropriate based on whatever it was you were attempting to convey.
We have not won a war since the War Department became the Defense Department. GOOD MOVE
But it is catnip for Boomercons. .
Thank you.
