Tariffs, crime, now housing — Trump pushes ‘emergency powers’ to the max
The New York Post ^ | September 3, 2025 | Rich Lowry

No matter what dictionary you consult, the definition of “emergency” is never “a chronic situation that the leader of a country would like to address using powers not otherwise available to him.”

This, though, is how the Trump administration tends to define the term.

A national emergency is British troops winning the Battle of Bladensburg and heading toward the White House in 1814.

A national emergency is Iranian radicals breaching the US embassy in Tehran and taking 52 American diplomats and citizens hostage in 1979.

A national emergency is a pandemic reaching our shores, killing the particularly vulnerable and sickening many millions more in 2020.

A good rule of thumb is that a national emergency should be obvious, such that no Jesuitical or motivated reasoning is necessary. The problem with ruling by emergency declaration is that it fundamentally distorts our constitutional system.

It uses the excuse of an emergency to exercise powers that Congress never intended to grant the presidency for the pursuit of routine policy preferences.

You can't just declare emergencies for everything. Government by emergency violates the design of the Constitution.

He should have called it a “housing desert” like a “food desert”. Then apparently no one would have complained.

Depends on what you consider an emergency. It would be up to congress to repeal the president’s emergency powers.
Though congress doesn’t seem to do much unfortunately

Well...things have been neglected for so long it is indeed at crisis levels. Never should have gotten to this point. It is and has been an emergency.

If you disagree with how to go about it let’s hear the alternatives.

I would argue that this is just how the left has defined “emergency” and Trump is just throwing that definition back in their face and forcing them to play the game by their own rulebook.

Trump is doing just fine. A national emergency is when the Obama-Biden cabal open up the Southern border, to allow 12 million foreigners - illegal aliens to stream in. To let them in with no C19 vaccinations , while pimping their Panic Scamdemic. While Americans are forced to get shitty injections, or lose their jobs.

The Democrats specialize in Anarcho-Tyranny

He should highlight Alligator Alcatraz and Angola as new, free housing for Illegal Aliens.

Most of the current Federal government's activities violate the Constitution.

Ever since FDR, the Presidency and the Congress have asserted powers to regulate, tax and interfere with the day-to-day lives of Americans in ways the Founders could have never have imagined, and Supreme Court has not only rolled-over but joined in with the notion of "protected classes," it's lunatic "right to privacy" jurisprudence and massive abuse of the "equal protection" clause.

This movement has almost always been towards the Left and to the unjust acquisition of wealth and power by the elites at the expense of ordinary Americans.

Some form of Caesarism was always going to be the result, although with Trump attempting to restore at least a modicum of mos maiorum an analogy with Sulla is more apt. Either Trump succeeds or not. If not, we'll quickly start getting arrested for our posts here just like in Britain. But to succeed, Trump will need to suppress the Democratic Party. In either case, the traditional American republic will be mortally wounded, just like the Roman Republic was after Sulla.

Trump is attempting to put Congress under the gun. Basically telling them in actions rather than words, “either you act or I will”

All of his actions are short term until Congress codifies but, it does put the pressure on them to freakin ACT!

Once again, it only seems to be problem for little Richie when Trump does it.

Why do you think that is?

Is it because Trump is actually effective or because it might prevent money from flowing into Richie's pockets?

I would hope that more than a few people here realize that. But sadly I suspect as long as it is Trump doing so they will give their blessing.

PDJT has taken the Rules for Radicals written by Saul Alinsky and thrown it back into their faces.

Little Bich Flowery spent 8 years cheering on every bone-headed idea of Rino GWB. Don't recall a single complaint from Bich for Bush's EO's: from creation of the Office for Faith Based Initiatives, a multitude of Trade 'normalization' agreements, infrastructure protection, creation of the worthless dept of Homeland Security, creating Freedom Corps, his amnesties, on Native American education, creation of Global Fund for fighting Aids, and layers of crap on Climate Change and Greenhouse gasses.

Bich would have done a Lewinsky on Bush given half a chance. Hoping for Bush's cigar to be shoved up his piehole.

I also remember Bich using his Nat Review magazine to convince Americans to vote for Hillary in 2016.

Now he's acting as Murdoch's stooge to go after Trump still. Give it up Bich, and go join your fellow travelers Jonah, Frum and Kristol over at the Lincoln Project and MSNBC.

When the left proclaims that the shining sun is a worldwide climate emergency, then anything can be an emergency.

They want to claim PDJT is using “emergency” for anything because the next time a D gets in the W.H. they’ll want to use “emergency” for absolutely everything...with the “Trump did this too” backdrop.
