Why China can build so quickly and America can’t
Yahoo News ^ | Sat, August 30, 2025 | Sean Illing

America has a hard time building stuff. Roads. Trains. Light rail. Bridges. Housing. Everything takes seemingly forever, if it even happens at all.

Meanwhile, there’s China. A country that builds much faster — high-speed trains, solar panels, electric cars, bridges, ports, drones — all churned out at breakneck speed.

Why can China do this, and why does it seem like America can’t?

There isn’t a single answer to the question about why China can move fast and why we can’t, but Wang offers one I haven’t heard before. He says one of the most important distinctions between the US and China is that the US is a society run by lawyers and China is a society run by engineers — and that many of our differences flow from this divide.

Same situation with Japan. There are 10 times more lawyers based on population in USA than Japan.

No such thing as private property in China.

Your home is in the way of a government project?

See ya!

Horsecrap.

America has outbuilt the world.

China is a dictatorship with little concern for its citizens.

Screw communist China.

Even if they had their $#it together in California, this is the main reason why it is impossible to build high-speed rail from L.A. to S.F.

That is true. While in USA every construction is bogged down in preparing environmental impact studies, China cares less about environment. China has been building a coal fired power plant every week, for several years, which is one of the cheapest forms of energy, while USA is running wild with solar and wind power, which are more expensive and more unreliable.

Yeah, it’s easy to build quickly when you fill support columns with paper or use substandard concrete because it’s cheaper and quicker to make/pour. Take a look on youtube and see all of the apartment towers that are toppling over due to the substandard and fraudulent work China is doing all across their country. Tofu Dregs.

The real issue here is “efficient” govt. Do we really want a totally efficient govt? Do we want totally inefficient govt?

There is a big range in the middle.

Our Founding Fathers designed a govt with checks and balances, to move forward slowly with a well thought out purpose. To make good long term decisions, not fashion of the day.

A nation of laws, not a democracy that moves with the wind.

A couple of reasons why they can build so fast are poor quality control and widespread bribery.

China doesn’t care if a bridge collapses if two trucks drive over it at the same time

Well...anyone who's visited Red China in the past 20 years,as I have, knows that if you're ever anywhere near any of its major cities it's almost impossible to breathe even on the clearest days. That's because Chinese officials don't have to worry about pesky citizens protesting or pesky legislators passing laws preventing a project going forward.

If the top brass in Beijing want it...it happens. Regardless of what the great unwashed (which is 99% of the population) wants.

You are correct. There is no regard for environment in China.

They don’t have to do publish plans, then wait for public input or do environmental impact statements. I’m sure there’s a long list of regulations to deal with.

Are you clueless, Sean Illing, or can you simply not research properly.

In a word...overregulation.

China is run by the CCP, who did their studies in engineering, not law.
