Can a Populist Oyster Farmer End Susan Collins’s Career?

When Senator Susan Collins of Maine appeared at a ribbon-cutting in the small town of Searsport this week, protesters awaited her. A now-viral video of the event shows Collins, a moderate Republican, at something of a loss. “Shame! Shame! Shame!” protesters shouted at her, until she said, “I have a suggestion. Would you listen to the suggestion?” One protester had an idea of their own. “Vote Graham Platner!” they replied.

Platner was national news by the time Collins arrived in Searsport. On August 19, he announced that would  run as a Democrat to unseat Collins, who has been in the Senate since 1996 and chairs the powerful Appropriations Committee. The state of Maine has become “essentially unlivable” for working-class people on her watch, he said in a campaign video, and he was “deeply angry.” In interviews, Platner has avoided labels, including “liberal” or “leftie,” but he also hasn’t shied away from topics that Democratic leaders often avoid. “People are being kidnapped into unmarked vans by masked police. There is a genocide happening in Palestine. Literal billionaires have taken over our government. And all Democratic leadership can do is send us another fundraising text?” he recently posted on X.

Though Platner is new to national politics, he’s familiar to the residents of Sullivan, Maine, where he was raised and lives currently. He is an oyster farmer and the town harbormaster, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army who served four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and he is still a competitive shooter. He entered the race against Collins at a vulnerable moment for her with her popularity declining — though she has defied expectations and polls in the past.

I don’t like Collins but she did get in line on the SCOTUS confirmation votes.

Another Bernie Sanders...yes, that’d be fantastic.

He is a Bernie Sanders socialist. He is being put up by the progressive wing of the dem party in a very slick rollout. He is not just a humble Maine fisherman, but a shill of the dem left.

No. Collins is a jerk but when push comes to shove she steps up. Unlike some of the more "pure" GOPs who can be counted on when they aren't needed but suddenly are no where to be found when their vote would change the outcome.

If we replace her let it be with someone better.

Otherwise you are exchanging the British Empire for the Empire of Japan. You might remember how that turned out in Asia last century.

Susan Collins is the best we can ever hope for from Maine. If she gets primaried, Maine will end up with another far left RAT Senator.

He (his democrat party liner funding machine tools) are the 2012 “nominate a gullible minion who was in the Army or ARNG” to fool the mushy crowd.

Maine is hopelessly Maoist. It’s easy to see Collins going down in flames. As bad as she might be she’s *much* better then any of the Maoists that Rat Party Headquarters would put forward.

I agree with others here, it’s better for Conservatives to replace a candidate that votes with us 70% of the time with someone who will vote with us 0% of the time.

...and they don’t call us the “Stupid Party” for no reason.

A study published by Congressional Quarterly found that Collins voted with her party on party-line votes 59% of the time between 1997 and 2016; currently, she is the Republican senator most likely to vote with Democrats. She voted to confirm Democratic Supreme Court nominees, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. The conservative magazine, Human Events, considered her to be one of the top ten RINOs, or what they label insufficiently conservative, in 2005. She was the subject of negative criticism from movement conservatives for her vote against repealing Obamacare.

A moderate republican? Not even close.

Planter is a misguided liberal...all liberals are mentally ill...whom I met Friday at the Blue Hill Fair. He wears his Marine service well, but he does not understand the inherent freedom of capitalism, the dangers of government control, the Second Amendment, that newly conceived babies are living human beings who should not be murdered in the womb...and he appears to have no saving relationship with Jesus Christ. He would be a disaster for Maine and America.

Collins is no prize, but far better for America than this duped man.
