A prominent Ukrainian politician and former parliament speaker has been shot dead in western Ukraine, officials said, as a search was under way to find the attacker.

Andriy Parubiy, who also previously served as secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, was killed in the city of Lviv on Saturday.

The Prosecutor General’s office said a gunman had fired several shots at Parubiy, killing him “on the spot”. The attacker fled, and a manhunt was launched, it said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the killing as a “horrendous murder” and offered his condolences to Parubiy’s family and loved ones.

“All necessary forces and means are engaged in the investigation and search for the killer,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media.

Parubiy, 54, was a member of parliament and had served as parliamentary speaker from April 2016 to August 2019.

He was also one of the leaders of mass protests in Ukraine in 2013 and 2014, calling for closer ties with the European Union.

Ukrainian officials did not immediately release a possible motive for the fatal shooting.

The mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, said finding the killer and establishing the circumstances of the attack was of utmost importance.

“This is a matter of security in a country at war, where, as we can see, there are no completely safe places,” he wrote on Telegram.

Tributes poured in from colleagues in parliament and the government, praising Parubiy’s contribution to Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty and independence during the 2013-2014 protest movement.

Former President Petro Poroshenko said on Telegram that his killing was “a shot fired at the heart of Ukraine”.

“Andriy was a great man and a true friend. That is why they take revenge, that is what they are afraid of,” he said,...

“Former Ukrainian parliament speaker shot dead in Lviv”

I like Ukraine’s style - put a bullet in the guy to send a message to political threats, rather than have him jump out of a building. I guess one can say that we’re getting some ‘bang for our buck’.

Interesting, as the bottom of the article states "The post Former Ukrainian parliament speaker shot dead in Lviv appeared first on Al Jazeera."

It is interesting how many "news" websites basically repackage some other "news" website. This used to be called plagiarism.

In 1991 Parubiy founded the far-right Social-National Party of Ukraine together with Oleh Tyahnybok. The party combined radical nationalism and neo-Nazi features (by its name and the “Wolfsangel”-like sign)

Even most Ukrainians considered them neo-nazis, using “brownshirt” tactics of street criminals and football hooligans to go after media broadcasters, journalists and politicians they did not like. After Tyahnbok and the subsequent All-Ukrainian Union “Svaboda” Party lead the Euromaidan coup/revolution, the most the Party were ever able to muster in Ukraine elections was 4% of the vote.

Don’t be fooled that this guy was some kind of mainstream “democrat.”

Clearly Parubiy’s radicalism caught up with him.

I’d have to know where he stood on the miniature thug at the top of their government, but at first glance, I’d guess this was Ukraine’s version of throwing your opponents out of a high rise window.

He was a vehement Banderite/neo-Nazi supporter with an um ... interesting ... history. Western Ukraine (including Lvov/Lviv/Lemburg) is their stronghold. So maybe the reports are true that the folks there are turning against the Ze!ensky regime? Maybe, maybe not.

What is certain: We’ll never know the truth of who did it or why. Most likely, a “Russian infiltrator” will be the official culprit.

https://eadaily.com/en/news/2025/08/30/neo-nazi-parubiy-was-shot-dead-in-lviv

In Lviv, according to preliminary data, a high-ranking neo-Nazi, former chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy, was shot dead.

According to Ukrainian telegram channels, “there was shooting.”
“Law enforcement officers are taking all measures to establish the identity of the shooter and his location,” the national police said.
Also, the media reported that the killer was a courier of the Glovo company, who delivered food.

Most likely the people of Ukraine dealing with their Neo- Nazi problem, who are deeply entrenched in their government.

Could be. More likely, it’s payback for some deal gone bad (SBU is notoriously corrupt as well as ruthless) or else payback for someone SBU tortured/killed who had important-enough friends/family.

In other news:

Russia intends to continue offensive actions against Ukraine, Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of Russia’s General Staff, has stated.

Source: Gerasimov, as quoted by the Russian Ministry of Defence

Quote: “The fulfilment of the tasks of the special military operation by the Joint Grouping of Forces will continue through offensive actions. Today we will define the tasks for our troops in the autumn period.”
***************************************
The peace attempt has failed because neither side changed any of their positions enough to move toward an agreement.

He had an epiphany and left the far “right” back in 2004, so he would have enemies on both the far right who might, and most definitely the Russians who would like to see him dead:

“...
Despite his move away from the Social-National Party in 2004[30] Parubiy was frequently the target by pro-Russian media, who routinely refer to him as a Nazi, especially after the Revolution of Dignity. For example, after the Constitutional Court of Ukraine declared the Law on National Referendums unconstitutional, Parubiy cautioned against the use of referendums to manipulate the population, pointing out that Adolf Hitler also used referendums in Nazi Germany to accomplish his goals;[31] Russian media (such as RIA Novosti, RT, Zvezda, NTV, Sputnik, and others), Ukrainian pro-Russian media (112 Ukraine, NewsOne, Strana.ua, KP, and others) and Ukrainian pro-Russian politicians (such as Vadim Rabinovich and Viktor Medvedchuk) distorted Parubyi’s phrase, stating that Parubiy had openly praised Hitler. It was eventually debunked by the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group and the media watchdog Detector Media.[32][33]

Could be, if you are following closely, Vlad stalks the Nazi Azov battalions ( and the foreign mercenary groups).

The Third Azov Nazi battalion was recently “ reduced” in strength by 50 percent in the Petrovsk encirclement ( or the encirclement just north).

The Russians are merciless on the Neo Nazi brigades, they haven’t forgot WW2.

The BBC are also reporting this, from their web report:
He organised and co-ordinated Maidan's "self-defence" - armed teams of protesters who guarded the sprawling tent camp in the heart of the capital Kyiv.
In other words, one of those on the ground leading the coup. I should imagine he was not popular in some quarters.

Acually, on April 15, [2014] after becoming the Kiev regime’s ‘chief of national security’ and finding Ukrainian troops unwilling to fire on fellow Ukrainians in the east, Parubiy went on Twitter to announce,
“Reserve unit of National Guard” formed #Maidan Self-defense volunteers was sent to the front line that morning.
Parubiy was referring to the neo-Nazi militias that provided the organized muscle that overthrew Yanukovych, forcing him to flee for his life.

Some of these fascist militias have since been officially incorporated into the Ukie National Guard.
