MOSCOW, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Ukraine launched a drone attack on Russia on Sunday, forcing a sharp fall in the capacity of a reactor at one of Russia's biggest nuclear power plants and sparking a huge blaze at the major Ust-Luga fuel export terminal, Russian officials said.
Despite talk of peace by Russia and Ukraine, the deadliest European war since World War Two is continuing along the 2,000 km (1,250 mile) front line accompanied by missile and drone attacks deep into both Russia and Ukraine.
Russia's defence ministry said at least 95 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted across more than a dozen Russian regions on August 24, the day that Ukraine celebrates its declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
The Kursk nuclear power plant, just 60 km (38 miles) from the border with Ukraine, said that air defences shot down a drone that detonated near the plant just after midnight, damaging an auxiliary transformer and forcing a 50% reduction in the operating capacity at reactor No. 3.
Radiation levels were normal and there were no injuries from the fire which the drone sparked, the plant said. Two other reactors are operating without power generation and one is undergoing scheduled repairs.
The United Nations' nuclear agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said it was aware of reports that a transformer at the plant caught fire due to military activity and stressed that every nuclear facility should be protected at all times.

Drone every pUKe power plant (not nuke though), transmission lines from th3 nuke plants and every substation. Turn off the power.
Auxiliary transformer? Likely located outside the reactor adjacent or in the switchyard.

Russia is going to experience a lot of pain going forward not like before. The question is why is Putin doing this? Is it at the behest of China? Russia could exit this war as the clear winner and get basically everything they wanted when the war started. Something ain’t right.
More lies by Reuters. The attack hit a transformer, not the nuclear plant, and a fuel depot, which was likely the primary target. A good raid against the Rooskie invaders.

Yes, a drone targeting a fuel depot was shot down by Russian air defenses, resulting in damage to an auxiliary transformer near Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. But the headline as written gets more clicks and outrage (as seen by kneejerk replies here).

How is a country desperately fighting off a foreign invasion being blood thirsty?
Putin never wanted this conflict. Stupid Blinken telling the Russians American would put misisles in Ukraine and nothing Russia could do... four days later.

Ports, pipelines, refineries. Make Russian oil expensive. Exclude Russian transactions from any direct and indirect payment involving dollars. All EU nations, US and those opposing Russian war should stop all citizens from entering Russia and refuse entry of Russian citizens. Expel all Russian nationals from US and allies.

Both sides want the war to end just as both sides wanted the American Civil War to end, but at least the North did not want a ceasefire freezing it in place after three years of the bloodiest battles. The North fought a war of attrition and bled the South dry. The Russians are engaged in a war of attrition against the Ukraine military. The objective is to destroy the Ukraine military and not have to face them again in the foreseeable future. No ceasefire will achieve that objective. No permanent peace agreement is acceptable to Ukraine. Ukraine used the Minsk Accords ceasefire to gain time to regroup and rearm. Russia will not consider another bad faith Western-inspired ceasefire agreement. And so they continue until Ukraine discovers its General Robert E. Lee who knew when to surrender his army rather than lead it to slaughter.
