The alert stated, per WSMV, "Run. Hide. Fight." The university reported the possible active shooter as being at the University Center or the school’s library.
The Chattanooga Police Department said they are working with campus police to investigate reports of shots fired, and authorities said they have not found any victims at this time. All City of Chattanooga buildings are in lockdown along with campus buildings.

Update: Lockdown Lifted Amid Reports of Active Shooter at University of Tennessee in Chattanooga
Draw your weapon, run toward, fight, don’t hide.
Behind effective cover is always a good idea

Gotta give them credit for adding the “Fight” part.
And now a word of caution. If innocents are being slaughtered, it’s a good and noble thing for an armed civilian to rush in to help. But when cops arrive, they often won’t be able to distinguish between a bad guy with a gun a the good guy with a gun.
Good guys have been shot by cops because of that.
I have no idea if running towards a gun is smart but it kinda sorta makes sense in a way, if you aren't dead in in their sights.
“Run. Hide. Fight.”
I am virtually certain the City's employee unions negotiated that little free break, er, "safety measure."
Good advice. If you can escape, do so. If you cannot, hide as well as you can and barricade doors. And if no escape is possible, arm yourself with whatever you can and try to attack from ambush.
It’s about damn time. I just about puked a few years ago when the Security Forces E4 giving our Active Shooter briefing said, “Run. If you can’t run, hide. We’ll come get you.” This to a room full of military members. Bravo Sierra.

The standard USMC close ambush SOP is immediate turn and charge the attackers firing as you go.
Grizzly bears also use the charge to good effect. Same for Cape Buffalo! Takes a cool hand to stay composed and aim at someone in a berserker charge coming straight you!
And it’s hard to find now, but when that psycho did that mass shooting at the mosque in New Zealand he was wearing a GoPro. Everyone was piled into a corner and he was gunning them down. One brave man went for broke and charged straight at him for all he was worth. He made it to within a step or two of getting him before getting hit and going down.
Probably had family there with him and just went for it. Almost made it.
“Run, Hide, Fight” has been the standard for active shooting training for at least a decade.
Local news in middle TN reports no shooter. No victims. No shots fired. Hoax expected.
Schools just started opening after summer break. TN schools have a habit, in the first week, to shorten it and a lot of times the first Friday is a day off. I could bet that is the case and someone idiot thought they could get an extra day.
And since the school did cancel the day, missions accomplished .
One in Vilanova now!
Things can get hairy.....

RIP Mr. Mark Wilson.
Heck...the US Military teaches their members the very same thing, every year as part of their required Basic Military Training.
