GE Appliances to invest over $3 billion in US manufacturing push

Aug 13 (Reuters) - Haier-owned GE Appliances said on Wednesday it plans to invest more than $3 billion over five years in its U.S. operations and workforce following the Trump administration's tariff policies aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing.

Global firms have been increasing their investments and presence in the United States after President Donald Trump pushed companies across sectors, including Apple and Ford to produce goods within the country and generate jobs.

The GE Appliances investment will create 1,000 jobs in five states and is aimed at expanding the company's air conditioning and water heating portfolio, increasing production output and modernizing its 11 U.S. manufacturing plants with new automation and capital equipment, the home appliances maker said. Earlier this year, peer Carrier Global also said it planned to invest $1 billion over five years in the U.S.

By the time the plan is complete, Louisville, Kentucky-headquartered GE Appliances said it will have invested $6.5 billion across its U.S. manufacturing plants and distribution network since it was acquired by Chinese consumer electronics major Haier from General Electric.

Haier is a Chinese company. It’s nice that we get jobs here, but the profits go back to China.
What is happening to our products being made and/or sold in China.?

Apparently only Trump has the foresight to see the tariff regime as an incentive to recapitalize America. The revenue is great, combine it with all the new investment (read capital expenditures) in the US and the benefits double.

I hate the HE machines our apt project just installed. I go to the laundromat and use an old fashioned machine....

They need to invest in improving the quality of there products. Pulling up the plans for appliances made 30 years ago would be a good start.

Yeah, but the multiplier effect of those manufacturing jobs in the US will be as much as 10X the direct payroll. Logistics are simpler and supplier clusters will emerge, reshoring even more jobs.

Primary jobs are more important than where the profits go.

Thank you for pointing that out. But we need American owned companies which can compete against foreign made products ...start small...aluminum and paper goods, small quality hand tools...printing...etc ..

I hope they put a fraction of that to new designs for longer lasting appliances.

Like going back to older, more reliable designs that had longer lives.

Two years ago we moved into a 55+ complex in which all of the appliances are GE. Washer, dryer, stove, dish washer, refrigerator all are inferior, and it is one of the reasons we are moving out in two weeks.

Haier is Chinese owned, but I own a few shares of Haier. I’m glad they are investing in the US. I just wish we had a foreign investment law saying 49% of an American business can be owned by a foreign business. I think it would help small towns...

Except, China is failing badly. Corporate control will be by the CCP which is also not doing well. Owning shares of Chinese companies is not a wise investment.

When my GE and Whirlpool washer and dryer that I inherited when I bought my house exhibited sub par performance, I replaced them with a SPEED QUEEN washer and dryer. Now we're talking! They are so good, when I touched the first load I ever washed in my SQ washer, I was startled. Now that is what CLEAN feels like. I'd never experience that utter clean before--there was always a slightly gummy residue. I only use 1 Tide pod and no fabric softener in the washer, so that wasn't the reason. Looking at the utility sink, my goodness--it gets EVERY last molecule of detergent rinsed out. More than I've ever seen in a utility sink following a wash. I am totally in love with my SPEED QUEEN, made in America, washer and dryer. They are like the 80s washers, with their own transmission. Go, Speed Queen!

Haier is STATE owned. I’ve seen Haier plants with the PRC flag waving over them.
