What parts of Ukraine does Russia control as Trump suggests a land swap?
The Washington Post ^ | 6:29 AM EDT August 10, 2025 | Niha Masih, Grace Moon

President Donald Trump suggested ahead of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska this week that Ukraine could cede land to Russia as part of a peace deal — an idea that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky swiftly rejected.

“Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier,” Zelensky said in a video address Saturday. The leaders of Britain and the European Union threw their support behind Ukraine’s president, saying a ceasefire must come before any negotiations.

Trump had said that “some swapping of territories” could be “to the betterment” of both sides.

Ukraine is a vast Eastern European country, covering about 233,000 square miles. If placed over the eastern United States, it would stretch from Missouri to the Atlantic Ocean and from Ohio to Georgia.

Russia illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014. After more than three years of war, Russia controls about a fifth of Ukraine, from the border with Russia to occupied Crimea — including regions that are home to important industries, minerals and Europe’s largest nuclear power station.

Since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia has seized all of the Luhansk region, much of the Donetsk region, large parts of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and small parts of the Kharkiv region and northern Sumy region, the launch point for Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region last year. Ukraine seized about 500 square miles of Russian territory in the surprise assault, hoping to use it as a bargaining chip in potential peace talks, but now holds just 4 square miles there.

Here’s what to know about the Ukrainian territory under Russian control.

Russia controls all of Luhansk, one of two oblasts, or regions, that make up the heavily industrialized Donbas area. After...

WAPO carrying water for NATO.
SInce when did Ukraine become interested in legalities? When President Trump asked Zelensky to investigate Hunter Biden/Burisma, Zelensky declined. The Ukraine is deep state HQ, laundering money and helping the Dems stay in business. And, Joe Biden owns a ‘bio lab’ in Ukraine. In fact, the US has, I think, 20 ‘bio labs’ in Ukraine. Everything the US Deep State wants hidden is in Ukraine. That’s why Mitt Romeny, Schumer, Pelosi et. all have relatives working for Burisma and other ‘businesses’ in Ukraine. Ukraine doesn’t bat an eye at breaking the law.

It concerns the lines of contact.

Not regions.

I would suppose, the “buffer” Russia has taken will be one issue.

My neighbor came over my property last week and took over 20% of my lot.

He wants to negotiate and swap land with me. He gets to keep the 20% he already occupies of my land, in exchange for not taking more of my land.

If I refuse, he threatens to kill some of my family members.
How could I refuse such a great deal? My neighbor, who I thought was my friend, negotiated the deal.

SInce when did Ukraine become interested in legalities?

It's not about legal matters. It's about an illegal invasion, which is a million times bigger matter than simple legalities.

When President Trump asked Zelensky to investigate Hunter Biden/Burisma, Zelensky declined.

The people in charge in the U.S. were not Trump's people, and things could have been handled differently with the right people in place.

The Ukraine is deep state HQ, laundering money and helping the Dems stay in business.

So, because Trump was wronged and the dems were crooked, Ukraine should be abandoned to be taken over by Russia?

And, Joe Biden owns a ‘bio lab’ in Ukraine.

Biden owns it? Can you prove it?

BTW, bio=labs exist all over the world. How does the world get rid of them, especially if they're personally owned by crooked people like Biden.

In fact, the US has, I think, 20 ‘bio labs’ in Ukraine.

US sanctioned biolabs exist in many countries, including China, and they were there during republican presidents too.

Everything the US Deep State wants hidden is in Ukraine. That’s why Mitt Romeny, Schumer, Pelosi et. all have relatives working for Burisma and other ‘businesses’ in Ukraine. Ukraine doesn’t bat an eye at breaking the law.

Well, Trump is in charge now, so go and suggest to him that you want Ukraine investigated, including Zelensky, and his American cohorts. Good luck with that.

The situation is similar to World War One.

By the end of 1915, every nation realized the war was a mistake. They all regretted it and wanted out.

But they had all lost too many men to return to the status quo. The politicians couldn't tell the people, "All those men died for nothing. Sorry!" They had to show some gain from the war.

And so the war dragged on into 1916, 1917, and 1918, until one side was finally spent.

Nor can the Russian people accept that these three years of bloodshed have been for nothing. Nor can Ukrainians accept that their sacrifices have been in vain.

Nor can Putin or Zelensky tell their people otherwise.

Have you been fighting him for three years over it? If there’s no higher authority than you and him you are in a pickle.

And that’s the REAL analogy of this.

There’s only one way to get them off of the land: Beat them and push them off.

The USA is not inclined to be the world’s policeman and risk open war with Russia.

Trump is trying to end this, at least the killing, but Russia will keep what Ukraine cannot force them out of.

But there is a big difference between Adorno and Ukraine.
Adorno is not corrupt.
Ukraine is hotbed of corruption.

Your German mentor has screwed up your logic, Adorno.
“So, because Trump was wronged and the dems were crooked, Ukraine should be abandoned to be taken over by Russia?”
Zelensky is crooked.
He’s a punk dictator, no better than Putin.
He will not hold elections, he’s a manipulator and a fraud.
Ukrainians want him out.
This has nothing to do with Trump being wronged.
And what’s this BS about “abandoning Ukraine” ?
If Ukraine were abandoned, Trump wouldn’t even be talking to Putin.

... guess you shouldn't have corruptly allowed a third party to militarize your property, so there's that.

The Key message of this article is Russia has invaded land that is a part of the Country of Ukraine. The only people who can cheer for that are the Russian bots who post here. I’ll be happy when Russia is kicked out and we don’t see this nonsense from these Russian bots anymore...

Trump was in charge before and Zelensky said 'no'. Don't bother giving me assignments or tasks to perform.

Any land for peace agreement is a affirmation for aggression by Russian.

Not only can pitin not “swap” any land he cannot accept “annexed” ukranian territory within his control or without to be kept by Ukraine. According to Russian law the entire oblasts are legally part of Russia. If he does he is dead, plain and simple

The swap I’d put on the table is for Russia to keep what it is holding (with some minor adjustments to the lines) and for Russia to give up the Kaliningrad Oblast.

Ukraine would get a decent Baltic port, and Lithuania would have one less border to worry about.
