KYIV/LONDON Aug 9 (Reuters) - Ukraine will not cede its land, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday, rejecting U.S. suggestions that a deal with Russia could involve swapping territories as Washington and Moscow prepared for talks between their leaders on ending the war.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he would meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, saying the parties, including Zelenskiy, were close to a deal that could resolve the three-and-a-half-year conflict.
Details of the potential deal have yet to be announced, but Trump said it would involve "some swapping of territories to the betterment of both". It could require Ukraine to surrender significant parts of its territory - an outcome Kyiv and its European allies say would only encourage Russian aggression.
"Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier," Zelenskiy said in a video address, adding that Ukraine's borders were fixed in the country's constitution.
"No one will deviate from this – and no one will be able to," he said.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance will meet Ukrainian and European allies in Britain on Saturday to discuss Trump's push for peace, Downing Street said, adding that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had spoken about it with Zelenskiy.
"They agreed this would be a vital forum to discuss progress towards securing a just and lasting peace," the Downing Street spokesperson added.
'CLEAR STEPS NEEDED'
Zelenskiy has made a flurry of calls with Ukraine's allies since Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff's visit to Moscow on Wednesday which Trump described as having achieved "great progress".
"Clear steps are needed, as well as maximum coordination between us..,"

This means there has to be regime change in either Ukraine or Russia.
Point number one to agree in Alaska Trump-Putin:
Immediately remove Zelinsky ito exile from Ukraine and
Hold Ukraine Elections for new President and Parliament within 30 days.
Such a poor negotiator. POTUS Trump will eventually tell Zelensky to just say “Thank You”.

Carve up Ukraine to its ethnic origins- we did it to Yugoslavia. Russia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary each get their territories back.

The reports are pretty clear about what Witkoff brought to Moscow to propose.
The ceding of territory will not happen. It is being finessed as “de facto” transfer of territory to Russia, without any agreement about it. Revisiting the subject will take place in 50 yrs, not before.
The phrasing is territory swap, which seems to mean that the lower 2 oblasts are only partially Russian liberated/occupied, but the upper two 100% that. (This all excludes Crimea, presumed to be a Russian fait accompli) What Russia has offered is the lower two the boundary will be the line of combat. The upper two 100% Russian. So this means those 2 lower oblasts that voted to become part of Russia are, in a Russian concession, going to be divided at the line of combat rather than take all of them.
This de facto declaration eliminates the need for a Zelensky signature.
Russian sanctions will end, but . . . Trump can’t control the EU sanctions. This may be the single biggest problem that has Russia continue its advance rather than stop where they are.
War crime prosecutions of Ukraine and some Brits in Russian courts, which are numerous, will be shut off, with that reciprocated elsewhere.
The Russian held land in the Sumy and Kharkiv region has not been discussed. Probably the Sumy area will be traded for Kharkiv.
With the lines of combat definitive, the big nuclear power plant will remain Russian.
Trump can’t control the EU sanctions.
The EU will keep buying Russian oil, as always.
Z has to reject any proposal that gives up Ukraine real estate.
If he accepts, he would be removed by the powers in DC, London, and Kiev, faster than you can say Putin.

Why do you want Russia to bomb hospitals and schools? Why not give Putin a deadline to pull out of Ukraine? Why not remove Putin from office if he doesn’t gp along to stop the war? After all, he did invade Ukraine...
