The brutal seizure and execution of the world’s most famous squirrel threatens to cost the State of New York a staggering eight-figure settlement.
Mark Longo and Daniela Bittner, the grieving owners of P’Nut and his raccoon sidekick, Fred, are seeking $10 million in damages for the death of their pets at the hands of investigators, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday in New York Court of Claims.
A swarm of cops and agents from the state Environmental Conservation and Health departments descended on the couple’s upstate Pine City animal sanctuary Oct. 30, where the animals were living inside Longo and Bittner’s home.

Oh, good grief.
GOOD. I hope the family wins.
I’d also like to see the decision makers and the executioners get serious jail time.
That was so rotten. I still feel bad over that. Imagine how that guy felt.
They deserve it.
$10 million for the executed rodent that propelled President Trump to the top. .
WORTH EVERY PENNY!
Make them pay and pay and pay.
I wish I could sit on the jury.
The taxpayers, who had nothing to do with this, will pay and the people that actually gave the order will not.
> It is illegal to keep squirrels and raccoons as pets in New York, where they’re considered wild animals. <
Well, there it is. The couple should lose their lawsuit.
But, wait. Maybe not. Perhaps it can be shown that the swarm of agents acted in an arbitrary manner. Do they normally go around seizing “illegal” animals? Or was this couple singled out for some reason, maybe because the squirrel was famous.
Anyway, it’s nice to see that New York’s crime is so low that they can devote so many agents to this “crime”.
Start big, then settle for a million
Official immunity needs to be severely restricted .
Too many government bullies are protected by immunity and no longer fear the tar and feathers once awarded such arrogant officials.
Excellent point. The exact way to deal with this large problem.
Let me know if a jury, hearing the entire truth and circumstances, offers this creep even that.
Which creep?
Squirrels will not get large payouts from the government until they start rioting in the streets, looting stores, and tearing down monuments.
Killing the squirrel was not the real problem. An armed SWAT raid for a rodent was the problem. Forcing the owners to stand outside in their skivvies for five hours was the problem. Escorts inside to use the bathroom was the problem. And the incompetence of Animal Control personnel in managing to get bitten by a terrified squirrel was the problem.
The state will settle for half a Mill.
Excellent analysis.
I doubt there was any bite.
Yup, and that’s another issue. They euthanized both animals more because they could than because they had to. To “send a message.” Message received, and now comes the reply.
