Mass Immigration, Legal Or Illegal, Is Incompatible With National Survival
The Federalist ^ | August 08, 2025 | John Daniel Davidson

Mass deportation of illegal immigrants is not enough to save America. We have to recover an insistence on assimilation.

There’s a bit more to say about Democrat Illinois Rep. Delia Ramírez, who in her recent opening remarks at the second annual Panamerican Congress in Mexico City declared (in Spanish), “I am a proud Guatemalan before I am American.”

You might think, as I initially did, that Ramírez is an immigrant from Guatemala. But she was actually born in Chicago. Her mother illegally entered the United States by crossing the Rio Grande while she was pregnant, which gave Ramírez birthright citizenship. In common parlance, she’s an “anchor baby.”

That Ramírez, a natural-born American citizen, sees herself as a Guatemalan first is telling, and it gives us a window into the mindset of the political left, which believes it’s problematic, even shameful, to identify as simply an American — that there is something wrong with being an American as such, and something uniquely noble or praiseworthy about being an unassimilated immigrant and a foreigner.

Telling, too, was Ramírez’s reaction after negative coverage of her remarks by conservative outlets and social media. She issued a statement that almost perfectly distills her animating ideology. “Let’s call it what it is: today’s attacks are a weak attempt to silence my dissent and invalidate my patriotic criticism of the nativist, white supremacist, authoritarians in government.”

She went on: “No one questions when my white colleagues identify as Irish-American, Italian-American, or Ukrainian-American to honor their ancestry. I’ve consistently expressed pride in my heritage and history — a pride also often reflected in the origin stories of my colleagues. Only those who believe America should not include the children of immigrants or be diverse would attack me — and Americans like me — for...”

Actually I agree with Delia on this.

It’s OK to honor your ancestry but that’s it. You shouldn’t be running around saying that’s your primary allegiance, especially if you’re in the Congress.

Illegal or what qualifies as legal today, makes no difference, the effect of mass immigration from the exact same countries is the same, people need to quit pretending that legal immigration is good, or even substantially better than illegal, they are the same peoples from the same cultures and countries, and too many foreigners of any type.

Agreed. Particularly without any attempt on our part or theirs on assimilation. The left is too ashamed of us being a first world culture to help the third worlders coming in adapt to being first world too. They want a dumb and dependent masses.

Besides Americans on rare occasions use ancestry to make a joke or a wisecrack, we don’t really identify as Vikings, or Irishmen, or people of Italy, we are more to likely identify as Californians, or Texans, of from Louisiana, or New York, and even that is mostly thrown out for amusement, like being fans of various sports teams.

In the book “bowling Alone” they mention that multiculturalism creates “low trust societies”
We would have to limit immigration and make a real effort to assimilate them but no one wants to do that since hating America /the west /white people is very popular nowadays

A nation that allows mass immigration of people whose culture is incompatible with, if not diametrically opposed to, the culture of that nation will not survive as a nation.

Just ask the native Americans.

Yeah but she identifies as “Guatemalan first” as someone born in this country. Big difference. If she had just said something along the lines about being proud of her Guatemalan ancestry nobody would have cared.

Ramirez breached her oath of office, impeach her and deport her. Some latinos cannot assimilate.

It’s an old issue.

As President Theodore Roosevelt declared, “There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism”.

Also, “the only true American was one who was “an American and nothing else” “.

TR said all that in 1915.

It’s true that after a couple of generations people don’t think of themselves that way typically. But only if they were already ethnically, religiously and politically aligned with the existing populace.

What has happened in the last 60 years is the importation of people who are not just ethnically different from us, but literally were the enemy for decades, if not centuries. The Mexicans here have been taught in their own country and here that This is Our Land! and the Gringos stole it! with an illegitimate war. Thus we get riots in SoCal replete with armies of angry Orks waving buzzard flags.

They aren’t “Americans of Mexican Descent”...they’re just Mexicans, and they think the King of Spain willed them this dirt.

Um, wow.

Gave her the benefit of the doubt, thought she her parents might have been here legally. Guess I shoulda researched it...

So she’s not really an American citizen, but she claims it and then decides she has a right to rule us.

Meaning her illegal alien mamacita is the one who decided for all of us who will be “The Americans”.

Or more generally, the productive ones won’t survive if they pay the way for too many unproductive ones including criminals. And if the lives of the productive ones are crippled by those others.

Of course it is incompatible with national survival. That is its purpose.

We need to rescind the Hart-Cellar Act and stop immigration for 20 years while we kick the undesirables out.
