Why Are We in the UN?
The American Spectator ^ | August 3, 2025, 10:19 PM | Jed Babbin

Both the General Assembly and the Security Council are broken because the alliances upon which they were founded no longer exist.

The world is insane, but that’s its normal state. We now have al-Qaida leaders who are about to be released from prison, the United Kingdom, France, and Canada are about to recognize a Palestinian “state,” and a hostage held by Hamas was photographed digging his own grave.

In Inside the Asylum I specifically warned that the UN was employing terrorists, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

There is famine in the Gaza Strip but Israel isn’t the cause. Hamas's sympathizers, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emanuel Macron, and Canadian PM Mark Carney, are supporting Hamas’s continued rule in Gaza by proposing to recognize a Palestinian “state” in the UN’s September session.

Ghazi Hamad, a senior member of the Hamas politburo, said the wave of Western nations moving to recognize a Palestinian state is the result of “the fruits” of Hamas’ October 7, 2023, massacre. That is one of the very few Hamas statements that is provably true.

The three so-called “leaders” are threatening Israel that if it doesn’t meet their conditions, they will recognize a “Palestinian state.”

Which raises a subsidiary question, to the effect of why is the United States a member of the United Nations? The UN doesn’t support the U.S.. It opposes most of our allies, Israel in particular. Yet we pay billions of dollars into UN pockets, most of which is wasted on corrupt and unproductive programs.

The answer to the question of why the U.S. is in the UN is that when the UN was established, the UN Security Council was empowered so that its resolutions were supposedly given the force and effect of...

The original purpose of the UN was to mediate between countries to stop wars. Given what is going on in Ukrainian it is clear that they this has not been successful. It is time to pull the plug.

I say stay in the UN, but only under these two conditions:

1. Quit paying dues. That money only goes to bad causes anyway. And if the UN bureaucrats don’t like it, they can write a complaining letter to the opinion page of New York Times.

2. Veto every resolution that is even slightly against our best interests. And if the UN bureaucrats don’t like it, well… see above.

we should start a new world federation on the principle that governments need to protect the rights of the individuals. only then will we trade with them. share our commitment to the protections of individual rights, and share in our wealth and prosperity.

The idiotic and useless LEAGUE OF NATIONS failed miserably and was based on much older garbage put out by delusional people, who had NO real understanding of geopolitics.

The UN was based on that FAILED idea and pushed by FDR.

And once established, it has NEVER worked at all, except for the evil members. It's one of THE most corrupt disastrous entity that has ever existed and should have been dissolved long ago!

So that leftist NGOs can use treaties held at the UN to get around the Constitution.

The League of Nations 1 was an utter failure.

The League of Nations 2 is an utter failure.

People never learn.

That’s an interesting idea. Because look at the five permanent members of the UN Security Council now.

The United States - a free country
China - repressive
Russia - trending repressive
The UK - trending repressive
France - a confusing mess

As a group, not exactly a shining example of freedom.

The UN should be moved out of the US. The other ideas should be considered.

Not only why are we in the UN, but why do we allow it to exist on American soil. Something that corrupt should reside in the EU, Africa, or Asia.

and the US falling from grace into an oligarchy trying to right the ship... we have the blue print in our constitution, we should press for its adoption worldwide.

I really like that idea. During the Cold War, the UN was a nest of spies. Maybe it still is today. I’d pick a neutral country like Switzerland.

No, scratch that. Switzerland doesn’t deserve the headache. How about an island somewhere? Put in an airstrip and a hotel, and they’re good to go.

The UN is only there for show, and to pretend to care about what other nations do.

The real UN, or UNs, are the regional defense organizations which keep an eye on each other. Without those defense alliances, WWIII would have occurred already, and the UN would have been as useful as lobbing insults at each other, which is what the UN does all the time anyway.

The only real purpose in staying in the UN is to veto communist resolutions.

The true purpose of the UN as designed by Stalin and implemented by Alger Hiss; was to allow the Lilliputians to ensnare Gulliver in a web of treaties that would limit his ability to achieve any of the public goals of the UN, While allowing the communist nations more or less a free hand.
