President Donald Trump issued a rare threat of nuclear escalation on Friday, saying he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be strategically positioned near Russia in response to what he said were aggressive remarks by Dmitry Medvedev, the country’s former president and current deputy chairman of its Security Council.
“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump said in a Truth Social post.
Addressing the matter later with reporters, he said the move was an effort to be “prepared.”
“He was talking about nuclear,” Trump said. “When you talk about nuclear, we have to be prepared, and we’re totally prepared.”
It was not immediately clear if Trump was referring to subs with nuclear weapon capabilities, or merely nuclear powered subs. The Pentagon keeps movements of its nuclear capabilities closely held, making it nearly impossible to confirm Trump’s announcement.
But his statement nonetheless made for a striking rhetorical confrontation that evoked some of the nuclear saber rattling that colored the Cold War.
Trump later Friday said the repositioned nuclear submarines were moved “closer to Russia.”
“We always want to be ready, and so I have sent to the region two nuclear submarines. I just want to make sure that his words are only words and nothing more than that,” Trump said in an interview with Newsmax.
Medvedev, who has been sparring with Trump online for the past several days, on Thursday had made reference to Russia’s Soviet-era automatic, retaliatory nuclear strike capabilities, after Trump told Medvedev to “watch his words.”

I’m wondering if this has anything to do with the Russian nuclear submarine base being damaged by the tsunami. Perhaps a subtle signal of some kind.
PDJT should go . . . for a walk, and get some exercize, take a shower, hug the wife, have dinner, read a book and go . . . to bed.
Before he blows a gasket.
Trump is fine. Maybe you should take a Xanax.

A nuclear war between the US and Russia would have no winners. Both nations possess vast nuclear arsenals—Russia with ~5,580 warheads and the US with ~5,044 as of recent estimates. A full-scale exchange would likely involve thousands of warheads, each capable of devastating entire cities. The immediate effects—blasts, radiation, and fires—would kill tens of millions within hours. For example, a single 800-kiloton warhead detonated over New York City could kill 4-6 million people instantly.
Long-term consequences would be catastrophic globally. Nuclear winter, caused by soot from burning cities blocking sunlight, could lower global temperatures by 5-10°C for years, collapsing agriculture and causing widespread famine. Estimates suggest billions could die from starvation and societal collapse. Both nations’ infrastructure, economies, and governments would be decimated, rendering any concept of “victory” meaningless.
Mutually assured destruction (MAD) ensures neither side could eliminate the other’s retaliatory capacity. Even a “successful” first strike would trigger a counterattack, with submarines and mobile launchers ensuring second-strike capability. Both countries would be reduced to rubble, and global civilization would face unprecedented collapse. No side emerges stronger—everyone loses.
Russia keeps saber-ratteling with their nuclear arsenal.
They have done so several times in the last 3 years.
I get it, they are in a hard spot and trying to use all assets available to them, including the “threat” of nuclear war.
This is Trump shutting them down.
I bet the nuclear talk will get a lot less after this.
Not a good idea to throw dicks on a table with Trump.

Trump didn’t do anything. Our boats are already out there and can strike anywhere at any time.
They are rational, doctrinal, have a very stable burocracy and are highly predictable.
They are leveraging all assets they have in support of their Ukraine campaign.
They don’t actually want a nuclear exchange. That’s reserved for very specific situations that pose an existential threat to them.
But by mentioning this, they create anxiety among people in the West. They are using their nuclear arsenal in what amounts to psychological warfare.
Trump called their bluff.
FYI, in the Cold War (of course both sides had a vastly larger nuclear arsenal), it was predicted that in the first 24 hours we would have ~25 million dead. Then comes the radiation, chaos and breakdown of society, etc.

We would kind of function for a while (parts of government), but ultimately everything would grind to a halt after about 30 days of so.
No Russian says anything unless Putin wants it said. He is a month piece for Putin.
Well that is the way the west looks at it.
But ....
Let's be insane for a moment ...
next stop ..... the twilight zone
To my understanding Russia has a very robust civil defense program for it's citizens. Their planning includes rising from the ashes.
With this in mind, the question changes just a bit.
Would the west end the world over Ukraine?
A small tack nuke takes out Kiev... then the ball is in our court.
Do we launch the big one and end it all ? hmmmmm ...
I don't think so.
Maybe just one for the Kremlin ? .....
Then we get one for New York ?
tit for tat ... who cries uncle ? and when ?
I believe the Russians think they can come out on top of the rubble.

I wish Trump had washed his hands of this conflict when he was elected and said it was Biden’s war and let the EU handle it the way they want. If we get into WWIII, it’s not going to be a video game; it’s going to get real.

It’s not about Ukraine. It’s never been about Ukraine, or even Europe. It’s about freedom, something Russia only pretends to have.
Your claims are exactly those of the old commies who spoke up for letting USSR have it’s way in any way, with the excuse that “nobody will win, it’ll all be rubble.”
The real question, as it always is, is what principles are you willing to die for?
I am with you, one of the few that is. Once again, Trump could have said nothing and we would be better off. He can’t resist being 16 again and talking smack. He cheapened himself to recognise a petty, drunken thug though I am getting sick of some Russian troglodite pulling the nuc threat every time they don’t continue to get a pass.
Every time a boomer goes out they sail to a place they can hit something vital owned by an enemy and wait for the command to fire. They don’t need to be ordered to be in position, maybe only closer to a target. Everybody knows this already, Trump did not need to embellish that fact.
I have hopes Trump gets wrapped up in building his ballroom and shuts up more often.
Hey ... I'm ready to rumble ...
God and country
Faith and freedom, friends and family
The thing is ... I don't get to make all the calls.
I think we are getting to the end game. We (the civilized west)
have let too much go too far.
Tell me what you think the scenario will be if Putin pops a tack nuke in Kiev.
Why would he not?
He couldn’t. The GOP senators are mainly RINOS and neocons and he likely had to make backroom deals with them to get legislation passed.
starting to question 47,
is this a sane move ?
