Game on in North Carolina as former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper launches Senate bid for GOP-held seat

Former two-term Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper is running for the Senate in battleground North Carolina.

Cooper announced his candidacy on Monday morning in the open-seat race to succeed Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who announced late last month that he wouldn’t run for re-election in the 2026 midterm elections.

"I have thought on it and prayed about it, and I have decided: I am running to be the next U.S. Senator from North Carolina," Cooper said in a social media post.

Cooper's campaign launch is seen as a major coup for the Democratic Party, as he was the party's top recruit in next year's elections, bolstering their chances of flipping a key GOP-held seat as they try to take a big bite out of the Republicans' 53-47 Senate majority

Seems to be a "moderate" democrat, but probably will be in lockstep with the radical democrats.

Gomer Roy is not a moderate anything...just a liar.

His Whuhan policies and his blathering thru Helene were disasters for this state.

It won’t be any better if he is a Senator...certainly a dumblecrat yes vote.

I just hope the pubbies have a credible candidate to run against him...Not sure about Whatley. But we really must keep this seat...

NC better find a good opponent for Cooper. I expect Cooper will win based on name recognition alone.

"I have thought on it and prayed about it …

Doesn’t that sort of thing warrant excommunication from the rat party?

he was a DISASTER on helping his state recover from flooding post-hurricane. i wonder how he polls in Asheville, a liberal bastion, but area still destroyed months later. Whatley hasn’t announced - but DJT has endorsed. not sure W is that well-known in state, frankly.

Cooper has won his previous elections by less than five percentage points. The Justice Department is going to have to closely monitor blue cities like Charlotte, Eviller, Raleigh, etc., to ensure the Democrats do not cheat.

He will be hard to beat unless we can find some big scandal that he is involved. He presents himself as moderate, but would vote with the party that butters his bread.

The only way I see him losing is if good voter reforms are passed. North Carolina has so much corruption in the Dem cities that it overpowers the more conservative rural areas.

Durham kept the polls open late so they could find the necessary votes for the Dem’s to win.

Tillis is not running. Trump is endorsing RNC Chair Michael Whatley to be the GOP nominee.

By the looks of Cooper's campaign announcement, he is going to run as a populist. The guy has all the charisma of a day-old dishwater, but he is a former two-term governor who built a "moderate" brand over his tenure. The Republicans had a veto-proof majority in the legislature, so most of his nuttier ideas never saw the light of day

He will be very tough to beat.
