RFK Jr. suggests psychedelic therapy for depression and trauma has Trump administration’s support

WASHINGTON (AP) — For decades, proponents of psychedelic drugs have come to Washington with a provocative message: Illegal, mind-altering substances like LSD and ecstasy should be approved for Americans grappling with depression, trauma and other hard-to-treat conditions.

A presidential administration finally seems to agree.

“This line of therapeutics has tremendous advantage if given in a clinical setting and we are working very hard to make sure that happens within 12 months,” Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently told members of Congress.

His suggested timeline for green-lighting psychedelic therapy surprised even the most bullish supporters of the drugs. And it comes as psychedelics are making inroads in deep red states like Texas, where former Trump cabinet secretary and ex-governor Rick Perry has thrown his full support behind the effort.

The administration’s embrace of psychedelics has sparked both excitement as well as concern from those in the field, who worry the drugs might be discredited if they appear to be rushed onto the market or are too closely linked with Kennedy, who is known for controversial views on vaccines, antidepressants and fluoride.

Lots of potential here actually. This stuff makes a pretty poor “party drug” but there is significant research backing up the efficacy of micro-dosing under controlled therapeutic supervision.

The mushrooms today are not the mushrooms of the 70's. Trust me!

They are propagated, selected, and bred for potency. If one is going to ingest them, use a spice grinder and milligrams scale, because it can be a very unsettling experience. Yes, micro-dose for sure. Maybe 10% of the normal get high as pluck dose by weight, not the handful of the 70's mushrooms put in your iced tea.

Yes, today's mushrooms are a poor party drug. Make sure a designated non -indulging safety watch is in control.

Idiocy.

I'm guessing that you have never personally experienced severe chronic depression/anxiety that is almost paralyzing. In which case you are constitutionally incapable of comprehending something like this. Its like a teetotaler comprehending the mental/physical condition of the alcoholic. Or the self-righteous, judgmental religious nutcase saying that alcoholism is simply "sin" and nothing more. They are clueless. Incapable of understanding. Blinded by their religious dogma.

Not at all and has been in research for 15 years.

So we shouldn’t even do scientific research on potential benefits from such drugs?

Eons of people using them probably mean nothing.

With all the seriously dangerous and addictive medications being prescribed right now for mental and emotional conditions, I really don’t think it would hurt to take a good look at psychedelics. Might even be more helpful and less dangerous than what they are already handing out.

I use to suffer terrible depressions in my 20’s. Then a friend of mine (who wasn’t even a druggie, the one time he tried marijuana it gave him an anxiety attack and he never did it again) suggested I try this. I was kinda leery because I was scared of hallucinogens but eventually worked up the courage to give it a try. I didn’t see any crazy sensory distortions it actually just chilled me out as I lay in bed for 6 hours listening to music. The next day my friend called me and we spoke for awhile and he said why are you giggling so much? Something like that would be out of character for me because I was usually depressed and cynical most of the time. But the shrooms took away all that for a solid 2 weeks afterward and put me in a very positive and easy going mood. Come to think of it I should probably buy some spores on the internet (spores are legal) and grow some so I can do it again. Regular antidepressants never did zip for me and I tried them all (including MAO inhibitors). But the mushrooms worked. So I’m glad they are finally going to study them for this.

I watched a really good series on Netflix about psychedelecs...Can’t remember the title off the top of my head. They delved into the history of the four most prominent substances and the host actually tried each under controlled conditions. I’ve never taken any such drugs, but I have an open mind about them, if they can actually help people.

I absolutely agree. I am extremely experienced with these compounds and they are very much safer than the psychotropic drugs they are handing out now...

Even just a one time use can change your mental health to the better and more positive...

“and has been in research for 15 years.”

Longer than that. I have been researching them since 1975... :)

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions based on moral agenda.

“If one is going to ingest them, use a spice grinder and milligrams scale, because it can be a very unsettling experience.”

Then soak them into a lemon slice and eat the lemon. Much easier on the stomach and it intensifies the effect.

Or just put it in tea and let it steep...

True.

However I am only aware of the Boston and New York research trials.

No the research if hallucinigen efficacy on mood disorders and depressive symptoms requires a broader subject cohort than n=1.

Thanks anyway.
