HELL'S KITCHEN, Manahttan -- New York City authorities made a disturbing discovery inside a van that had been involved in an accident Tuesday night on a busy street in Manhattan.
Police were called to the scene near 42nd and 10th Avenue just after 7 p.m.
The 31-year-old driver was operating a 2013 Chevrolet express van that had a food cart attached which became loose and struck a parked 2021 Kia Serrano with a 48-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy.
Police say the driver, Sayed Khaled Elsayed Abdelmohsen, fled the scene, but the 48-year-old woman followed him in her vehicle.
First responders noticed a strong smell of gasoline coming from the van and requested FDNY assistance.
At first, the driver of the van tried to get rid of his keys and said he couldn't open the vehicle, but firefighters forced entry.
They say what they found could have turned catastrophic with a little heat or a single leak or spark.
"Propane is a very low lying gas, it would have stayed very low to the ground, it would have almost doubled and tripled itself in size as it turned from liquid gas into vapor, and the explosion would have been unbelievable," said FDNY Special Inspections Chief Joe Rogers.
Authorities confiscated 76 20-pound propane cylinders, 15 5-gallon fuel containers for a total of 75 gallons of gasoline, and 10 gallons of diesel.
The driver was arrested and facing several charges, including reckless endangerment and multiple fire code violations.
What exactly the driver was doing is under investigation, but authorities say they have a good idea and they are cracking down.

Captain Obvious and the rest of the universe knows what WABC reporting apparently does not.
“Sayed Khaled Elsayed Abdelmohsen”
I fear it’s only a matter of time
“Sayed Khaled Elsayed Abdelmohsen”...
He wasn’t up to anything suspicious, was he?
Between NY and MN, if we don’t start kicking these b*stards out, we will be worse off than Paris or London.
Was the guy’s name Charlie Kelly?
They know damned well, they just refuse to admit it
Oh my, caught another Amish person up to no good, eh?
The Amish shouldn’t be blamed for everything...just sayin’.
The math and the identification of flammables makes no sense.
It is amazing how modern news reporters can deny reality.
Throwing away the keys and resisting a simple look-see pretty much screams he isn’t just picking up recyclables or is just Frank Hill serving customers’ grilling needs.

Nothing suspicious about that
The name says exactly what his plans were.
Gasoline is a fine thing to carry around in your vehicle, depending on the circumstance.
But not a muslim in New York.
LOL!
...”The dramatic images sparked speculation online, with commenters expressing concern about a possible terror threat. However, officials and observers familiar with the incident suggested the van was more likely used to refuel food carts around the city — a common, if hazardous, practice.”...
Not a bright bulb to run around unlicensed and not taking safety precautions, and not letting firemen check the van when it reeks of fumes if he is just a vendor fuel server.
I wonder what his immigration status is.
Sayed Khaled Elsayed Abdelmohsen
Was this guy a “gypsy” fuel supplier for food carts ?
Definitely off. I am not sure 76 20lb cylinders of propane would even fit in this van. 20lb cylinders are the BBQ size cylinders...
Islam was never a religion of peace. Islam is the religion of fighting.. No one should believe that the war that we are waging is just the war of the Islamic State, alone.. It is the war of all Muslims, but the Islamic State is spearheading it. It is the war of Muslims against infidels.
~Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Why label an entrepreneurial individual in a legitimste business as a “gypsy”
He recognized a market and began servicing it.
