Gov. Gavin Newsom eyes redraw of California congressional districts to send more Democrats to DC

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday confirmed he's seriously considering two options to try to redraw California's congressional districts to get more Democrats elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The update comes after President Donald Trump earlier this week urged Republican state lawmakers in Texas to help the party pick up five seats in that state. Gov. Greg Abbott has directed the state Legislature to discuss redistricting in an upcoming special legislative session.

Unlike Texas, the California Legislature does not draw district maps. Every 10 years, the state's independent redistricting commission undertakes the work through a lengthy, citizen-led process. Voters approved this commission and process in 2008.

Newsom said Wednesday option one involves calling a special election to take the state's redistricting process back to the voters. Constitutional amendments in California first require a 2/3 vote from state lawmakers before the issue heads to voters.

Option two involves calling on the California Legislature to quickly redraw the congressional district maps before the 2026 election. Elections expert Paul Mitchell posted on X Wednesday the state constitution says nothing about a mid-decade redraw for Congressional maps, which may or may not allow the legislature to do it.

"I was one of, at the time, a few Democrats that supported independent redistricting," the governor told reporters in Los Angeles. "At the same time, I'm very fearful about what's going on in this country."

Newsom, pointing to Texas, said, "they're playing by a different set of rules."

"We can sit on the sidelines and talk about the way the world should be, or we could recognize the existential nature that is this moment," Newsom said.

Some California lawmakers from both parties on Wednesday told KCRA 3 they think the idea is ridiculous and called it gerrymandering.

They already have 83% of the seats in California. Kamala won with 58% of the vote in 2024.

The Supreme Court constantly rules against Republican efforts to re-district.

That would be OK if he took illegal aliens off of the Census and just count citizens. Needs to be done anyway.

CA Republicans are already screwed when it comes to redistricting, and they have been screwed by Democrat gerrymanders decade after decade for as long as most of us have been alive (look up “Phil Burton”).

The current CA process is about as “independent” as Bernie Sanders — it’s all Democrat all the time.

That’s not to say that the GOP couldn’t be even MORE screwed in California (or New York, or Illinois, or Pennsylvania, or ....), when it comes to state and congressional district maps, but only the most biased news source would pretend that things are even remotely fair currently.

Trump eyes redraw after millions of illegals are removed from the state and they lose several congressional seats.

"They already have 83% of the seats in California."

By obtaining only 60% of the aggregate congressional vote in 2024. Those independent Democrat gerrymanderers did an excellent job, as they always do in California.

Isn't Texas considering redrawing districts according to a census of specifically citizens?

Maybe that's what has Noisome so concerned.

California is ground zero for the election fraud machine. When the Republicans did nothing and let B1 Bob Dornan’s election get blatantly stolen, they knew it was game on. CA was 50/50 back then. Losers.

They are already imploding as a result of their choices...

We'll scrub down the state after it's done and try again.

First order of business would be to drive out the cartels, but they seem to have co-opted the leadership of the California Democrat Party.

In the days following the 2024 election, FR was loaded with screams that the seats not decided election night in Calif were being stolen.

They were not being stolen that night. Those seats were redistricted long before election night.

of the 9 GOP House seats from Calif, 3 were won with a margin < 3%. That is somewhat the top end credible effect of any redistricting.

The way the world should be according to whom? Governor Nuisance, AOC, Jasmine Crockett and Commie Mamdani?
