American killed by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, family says

A 20-year-old American from Florida was allegedly beaten to death by Israeli settlers while visiting his family in the West Bank, according to Palestinian health officials and his family.

Sayfollah "Saif" Musallet was killed in the town of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry in the West Bank.

A second man was also shot dead in the attacks, according to the health ministry.

Musallet was trying to protect his family's land from Israeli settlers, who surrounded him for over three hours, blocking the ambulance from reaching him, according to his family. He died before making it to the hospital, they said.

Check out how Wikipedia describes this town, which the Muslims now call "al-Mazra'a ash-Sharqiya" - but which was previously a town called Mezera, created by Crusaders, who built a church - which Muslims destroyed in the 16th Century:

"In the wake of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, and after the 1949 Armistice Agreements, Al-Mazra'a ash-Sharqiya came under Jordanian rule."

Came under? After who "ruled" it before? Jews, who were expelled from their homes and had to flee for their lives, as Jordan annexed the West Bank until 1967.

See how that works? Arabs conquer an area and they legitimately "rule." Jews re-conquer the same area, and now they are illegitimate "occupiers"

If this place is near Ramallah it would have been what was Samaria in ancient times, not Judaea--earlier probably territory of the tribe of Ephraim and part of the northern kingdom of Israel after the death of Solomon. Probably mostly Christian in the period immediately before the Arab conquest in the 7th century (since the Samaritans and Jews in the Holy Land did not fare very well under Byzantine rule).

NPR had something about this incident a few days ago but very few details other than the guy's name and that he was born in Florida. (I don't listen to NPR but an item popped up on my phone.)
