Last orders: Pubs in Britain will close at rate of one a day in 2025, trade body warns

British pubs will close down at the rate of one a day this year, the industry’s trade body has warned, blaming high business taxes. At the same time, the hospitality sector has called on ministers to tackle “eye-watering” costs.

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), which represents more than 20,000 pubs in the UK, said it expects 378 to close this year in England, Scotland and Wales, at a cost of 5,600 jobs.

This would mark an increase on last year’s 350 closures, continuing a long-term trend that has made more than 15,000 pubs call last orders once and for all since 2000.

The BBPA singled out business rates as one of the hardest costs for the industry to bear, but said that it was “not too late” for the government to reform the tax.

Business rates are based on a property’s “rateable value”, an estimate by the Valuation Office Agency of how much it would cost to rent the premises.

Pubs’ business rates tend to be disproportionately high in relation to their financial viability because pubs often occupy high-value buildings, while being run on very tight profit margins.

The BBPA also highlighted other costs affecting the UK’s 45,000 pubs, including beer duty and VAT, which it said meant £1 in every £4 spent on beer went directly to the Treasury.

Britain is under the firm control of Maoists today and will be *at least* until the summer of 2029 (their next election). So George Harrison’s “Taxman” should be their anthem now.

British pubs have been dying for decades. The franchise system finally invaded them. Also annoying busy body town counsels that say they want things like pubs to exist, but also don’t want cars or people clogging up the village. Also, England had a freakin lot of pubs, some level of culling was inevitable.

Watch Clarkson’s Farm on Amazon Prime to see how the local councils treat business people. They go full NIMBY

In ten years from now, you can go to a British pub in Dubai but you can't find one in the UK.

On the bright side, maybe they will start voting more soberly.

American engineers built stills. The Saudi government let it go.

HOWEVER, if anyone was caught selling "sidiqqi" (my friend) to Saudis or any Arabs, it was a LONG time in their hoosegow.
So my husband, who made the sidiqqi, sold it to the Brits.
His still made fifty gallons of 180 proof, cut 50% with 'SWEET WATER". Powerful stuff, as it was still 90 proof. I would only drink it if I could have it dulled with MUCH sugar and cream.

Sidiqqi made one's legs ache. Don't ask me how or why, I RARELY had it. Yuck.

We lived over there for five LONG years, traveled to much of the world (first class) and had enough to buy a house in an expensive city.
We had our house paid for in nine years...not THIRTY years, nine.

One thing, there were Protestant ministers and Catholic priests over there. Other wise Americans wouldn't go over there unless they could have their men of the cloth.
The Saudis settled it by calling the ministers and priests "special teachers." Our "special teacher" was a Dominican priest. The Protestant minister was a Lutheran but could do all the Protestant denominations.
Their "holy" day was Friday and their weekends were Thursdays and Fridays. I would NOT go to the daily Mass on Fridays. I would only go on Sundays.

My co-worker, a Catholic Indian told me that I HAD to go Mass on Fridays...not on Sundays. I told him that he was nuts and he threatened to tell my Saudi boss. I didn't listen to him and he DID tell my Saudi boss.

My Saudi boss listened to Harry and then said: "Harry, God is number one. There is always time for God. ****** can go to pray whenever she wants."

When we returned home I DID start attending Mass on a daily basis and THANKED our good Lord for all His blessings.

St. Thomas, the "doubter" Apostle, evangelized southern India and that's why there are Roman Catholic Indians (the REAL Indians from India), who live and work in the KSA, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Any questions?

.

Sidenote: When we finally got home I KISSED the linoleum flooring at our airport...I was SO glad to be home for good, where I belonged.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Watch Clarkson’s Farm

Was getting ready to post the same thing. The local councils seem to have their nose firmly in every business decision. How many bathrooms to have, who must be allowed to use them, where people can park, the list goes on and on.

“… high business taxes…”

I bet that for every pub that closes, a blind pig opens. Of course, they’re not as nice and in sketchy neighborhoods, but they’re probably more diverse.

S’okay, moslems don’t drink alcohol.

They do indeed drink alcohol.

Islam has no shortage of sinners just as every other religion does.

Who isn't drinking alcohol are the totally risk-averse Gen-Z and this could be why pubs are closing (happening here as well).

There were a lot of American pubs which we call bars or dives that have closed in the last 15 years.

Local joints some of which had some pretty good food at reasonable prices.

But the no smoking rules put them out of business.

The franchises could survive without smokers but not the local joints.

I’m not a smoker nor have I ever been a smoker, but I had no problem with smoking.

What has survived is some places that have video poker which really sad.

Lonely people sitting in front of screen passing time throwing their money away.

They're not going to the bars. Probably a combination of social media and covid shutdown in 2020. They have no motivation to go out, which is weird.

Drink prices at bars are insane these days as well.
