41,000 Cuyahoga County homeowners are behind on paying property taxes as the second half comes due

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The second half of property taxes are coming due this week, but 7% of homeowners have yet to pay the first half, according to the county’s treasury.

Most of the county’s 564,000 property owners are up to date on their tax payments, according to county data provided to cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer through a records request. They’ve paid over $1.5 billion in property taxes, which provide revenue for local schools, cities, villages, townships, libraries and various county-level services.

(snip)

The higher delinquency came after the countywide property reappraisal, which increased home values an average of 32%, resulting in higher tax bills for many. But County Treasurer Brad Cromes doesn’t attribute delinquency solely to the new assessments.

He pointed to data showing that the overall percentage of late payments is unchanged from last year, when about 7% of homeowners also hadn’t paid the first half of their bill. The dollar amount for those delinquencies, however, is “significantly higher” because of the higher appraisals, he noted, jumping from $56 million last year to $76 million this year.

“...Property Taxes need to be totally eliminated. They are nothing more than Governmental Theft!!...”

Yep, we call it “legalized theft” around these parts.
The “You Will Own NOTHING And Be Happy” crowd loves em and wants suck more and more “blood out of the turnip” every single year. In many cases, it becomes unsustainable for the property owner, and people have to sell the home they’ve lived in for years....just ain’t right.
Of all the taxes that have been leveled on the “unwashed masses” by their fellow man, property taxes, by far, are the most insidious, abused and evil of the bunch, especially for the elderly.
IMHO, IF one is fortunate enough, by the grace of God, to live to 70 years old, they should be exempt ANY TAXES of any kind. They’ve paid enought their whole working lives and then some...

My property taxes pay for garbage pickup, recycling pickup, and much more.

GARBAGE PICK UP HERE IS PAID TO WASTE MAGMT.

WE do our own recycling-—OR REPURPOSING—=== what I do.
EMPTY square ice cream gallon buckets make great use in garage, etc. Also plastic see thru jars.

SNOW REMOVAL IS VERY MINIMAL

ROAD MAINTENANCE/SHERIFF’s & SCHOOLS BIGGEST PORTIONS

DO OUR OWN weeding along fence lines/county roads.

NYS cost shares Medicaid with counties.

Guess where the biggest share of our county property tax is going...

My city cried about how much garbage and recycling cost until they got to raise rates, then subcontracted to private industry at a significant savings.
When I asked what they plan to do with the surplus............
UPGRADE THE RECYCLING CENTER

where does money come from to pay for everything that government is doing?

Maybe government needs to do a lot less.

Pre-1913, all government spending was <8% of GDP, and Fed.gov was 2% or lower

And yet somehow, America became the most advanced country in the world at that time.

Here’s how it works in my town....most citizens are unaware of it except for school employees and their families who then vote ‘yes’.

100% yes. I didn't realize the game until I knew somebody on the school board. He pointed out how it's becoming increasingly hard to elect an independent board member. The teachers' union is an organized monopoly, and they will promote friends, relatives, etc... (often skirting state law - but who will spend the money to sue them?) for school board, where spending measures the union approves of are pushed through with union-organized voting and a few non-union Karen mothers

I live out in the county. We pay for our own trash pickup. It’s well worth it, too. I don’t pay for that shitty “city water” because I have my own water well and septic system.

“How many people bother to vote in Local elections?”
Therein is the problem. Most local elections have around 10-15% turnout from what I understand. My hometown of Tucson is run by democrat shitheads. If around 30% of the local republicans bothered to vote, they could get rid of all of them.

C. Schwab’s “You will own nothing and be happy” is unravelling.

With property tax you can never own real property, most people who can afford to pay the property tax are happy but those who can’t . . .

"Petition Title and Summary of Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Eliminate Property Taxes in Ohio Is Accepted"

A few years ago the citizens of Arkansas tried that. They gathered more than enough signatures to place it on a ballot. Well after the deadline their Rulers got a servile judge to disallow most of the signatures and kept the measure off the ballot.

That was in-between Huckabees.

Back in my day, we had 40 students in each classroom. They have 16 and learn less.

The largest class I taught was 42 7th-graders. Average at the beginning of my career was in the mid 30s. Besides the crazy ideas regarding how to teach basics that are rampant in today’s educational world, there is the complete breakdown of discipline.

I’m willing to bet that in your day, a teacher could and did warm the seat of a misbehaving student. Nowadays even a cross word from the teacher is not allowed. Right before I retired there were signs in teachers’ areas requiring at least four positive things to say to a kid, no matter what he did, for every negative.

And then there are the kids with IEPs who cannot be punished for anything they do that might be covered by their IEP without a formal hearing that can include a lawyer to safeguard the kid’s rights.

That class of 16 where kids are learning less likely has a couple of kids who take up 75% or more of the teacher’s time.

This isn’t meant as justification of property tax, but rather why public education has gone so far downhill.

I was 18 yrs old when I escaped the horrid government of Detroit and Michigan.

Thanks to serving in our USN, I viewed equally awful government in Maryland and California.

I’ve been in FL for 35 years. One of the best decisions of my long life.

I live in a deep blue area. These mooks approve every single school referendum that raises property taxes. Every one. So frustrating.
