The brown bear (Ursus arctos) populations of the world are essentially the same animal, although known by different names. The European brown bear, the Hokkaido brown bear in Japan, the brown bear in Russia, the grizzly bear and kodiak bears in Alaska, and the grizzly bears in Canada and the lower 48 states are genetically the same bear with minor variations.
Brown bears are complex mammals that can learn and adapt. Brown bears quickly learn whether humans are dangerous or not. When brown bears are actively hunted, they learn humans are dangerous predators and learn to avoid humans. When the bears are not hunted, they learn that humans are not dangerous.
A Scandinavian study published in 2018 shows human injuries and deaths inflicted by brown bears in Sweden and Norway from 1977 to 2016. There were two deaths and 42 injuries, which were not fatal. The bears in Sweden were first protected in 1913. The bear population was estimated to be 130 in 1930. Regular hunting was resumed in 1943. By 1977, the bear population had increased to about 500. By 2008, the population had increased to 3,300. It had been reduced to 2,800 by 2016. 41 of the 44 incidents in the Scandinavian study happened in Sweden. The three that happened in Norway were very close to the Swedish border with Norway.
The brown bear population in the contiguous 48 states between Canada and Mexico increased rapidly during the same period. This allows a comparison with bears in the lower 48 United States from 1975 to 2016.

I still don’t know what the point of allowing Brown Bears to live is when all they do is have an attitude. If we’re the top predator, then we should be putting them in their place, and if they won’t cooperate, then goodbye.

How can hunted bear kill ? Dead bears can’t kill.
I think the point is to claim people are *not* the top predator.
I have seen bear lovers claim they want to be able to travel in wilderness where humans are *not* the top predator.
I guess they get some kind of thrill from that. It is also anti-Christian, as God in the bible gives man dominion over the earth and all the animals which live on Earth or in the waters of the earth.
Val Geist used to talk about this. He said that bears in British Columbia and wildlife in general were perfectly well behaved as managed by hunters, miners, timber people, etc. until the arrival of “hikers” demanding protection for wildlife. His advice was to carry a gun, as that would communicate confidence to the animals.

Lots of bears are hunted without the bear being killed.
Those bears learn to fear humans. Their cubs are taught to avoid humans. The bear population learns to respect humans as a dangerous predator. Even bear that come across remains of a bear killed by humans learn to associate human scent with a bear’s death.
If bears prefer to not be endangered, they should arm themselves.
They serve a purpose in controlling their prey populations.
Many of the bear deaths can be attributed to sheer human stupidity.
I know what it meant. I was trying to be a smart ass.
Wow, they’re just figuring this out! I’m shocked!
Same, same with mountain lions. First hand knowledge
of this growing up in the mountains of Oregon before I graduated high school.
Tagged along quite a bit with a neighbor that ran
bears and cats with dogs. Treed’em for the
win other than one bear kill a year.
They all feared humans back then and stayed away.

Sarcasm, obvious in the spoken word, can be harder to detect in writing...
This bears repeating.
There are people, mostly from urban areas, who think of animals as a sort of human.
Not only as a sort of human, but as a human in the culture they are familiar with. They believe - be nice to the animals and they will be nice to you. There are a couple of casualties from this sort of delusion every year.
This delusion is fostered by observing animals where they have an abundance of food. Well fed animals tend to be less aggressive.
I am guessing bears talk amongst themselves. “You hear about ..... “
If you want to be the dominate species on earth... Every now and then you need to assert to the other species, just who’s running the show on this planet.
Otherwise, they’ll be thinking to themselves that they are the dominate species and then just go around doing whatever they want to... That is not the case. Kill a couple every now and then... Assert your power and remain dominate.
Kind of like Trump did when he kicked Iran’s ass.
